Chocolate/Mauve Ameraucana color project~ BeakHouse

We have to sell some of them to feed the remainders....... it's not cheap to raise birds.

I've finally got my feed bill under control by going to whole grains. My business partner even found a company to mix us a vitamin and mineral supplement to put in the feed and we are at about $10.50 per 50 lb of feed. I was paying $16.00 to Purina wholesale. I can't imagine what retail is now.

I am only able to go $18 a bag whole grain because I use organic grains and try to avoid corn and soy above 5%. I saw that retail is about that for the bagged commercial stuff...it's hideous.

What does your recipe look like that it's so affordable? Amazing! I so wish I could do that here. It's killing me for real now that I have so many peas and turkeys. I'd let them roam farther for their own food, but winter is just too dangerous if they don't come home to roost and end up in trees...so they are penned and I have to provide.

We are using a mixture of peas, lentils, triticale, red & white wheat and oats. No corn at all.

The vitamin mixture has a little soy; we went mainly with Canola meal. It is high in protein and costs less.

All these grains are grown local and are in abundance up here. We didn't experience drought conditions last year.

That's awesome. I'll have to revise my recipe again...my provider is finding fewer grains to carry because we got wiped out last year. Bad drought. Crops turned black.

If only I had the space...
Heck- I barely have the space...but I can't stop!!!

It's like when you're full, but it's soooooo yummmmmmmyyyyyyyy.

Are you ready for Snowblivion? We're slated for 12-18" here...and we just got 11"! Poor hubby is working 14 hour days plowing it all. No rest in sight.

We didn't get real snow this year... it was just enough for frozen waterers, not enough for sledding. It's warming up now... next month is baby chicks at the feed store!

Hope you & your chickens make it through safely!
