Chocolate Orpington Project

I've heard of chocolate oegb's. They have single combs... a bit far from orpington but it could work.

eta: just read pg. 3 and its been thought of ...and dismissed already.

well if you breed one of those with a orp, you might get the orp comb .. just a thought

Yeah, that's what I was thinking also. It's worth a shot. I plan on keeping good records just in case.

I found some Chocolate Wyandottes at Sandhill Preservation that I may can use to get some of the round shape into them.

i woould love to see how that turns out

I won't be able to get a hold of any chocolate Polish until this fall. Then it will be another 6 months. So I won't be able to get started on this project until at least spring.

Not trying to beat a dead horse, but just in case it wasn't made clear in earlier posts, Chocolate is sex-linked, which means if you breed your chocolate OEG to a black orp hen, only the pullets will be chocolate. If you breed those chocolate pullets back to a black orp, ALL the babies will be black, I believe only half the males will carry the chocolate gene. If you breed one carrying the chocolate gene to a chocolate hen, then you could get either chocolate pullets, or black cockerels or chocolate cockerels. If you get a chocolate cockerel, you are amost in the home stretch for setting color, but will likely be a long ways from setting type. I'm not sure if you can get black pullets from a chocolate hen and a black roo carrying the sex-linked chocolate gene. I defer to those better educated at this point. I do hope you take a whack at it and show us pics!!!

Edit to add. You can take that black roo known to be split to chocoate, breed him to any black hen and any chocolate offspring will be female.

I hatched this orpington chick out on June 2. I was really excited when I saw the color. I only have 6 orpingtons in a breeding pen. I have 2 blue hen2 black hens 1 white hen and a white rooster. I got them from Sandhill. The whites were supposed to be blue and where more like splash colored chicks. There is no way another bird got into this pen so i don't know where this color came from. The other chicks hatched from these birds are mostly a cloudy grey to splash color. Unfortunately I checked this chick today and it has black wing feathers coming in Its head, back and breast are still a rusty brown Here it is at 1 day old
