1) What type of bird , age and weight (does the chicken seem or feel lighter or thinner than the others.)
3 month old Chocolate Orpington, weight unknown, not lighter or thinner than others.
2) What is the behavior, exactly.
Started off panting, breathing fast, not eating as well as usual. Not as bad now, but still lethargic.
3) How long has the bird been exhibiting symptoms?
2-3 days
4) Are other birds exhibiting the same symptoms?
No
5) Is there any bleeding, injury, broken bones or other sign of trauma.
No
6) What happened, if anything that you know of, that may have caused the situation.
Unknown
7) What has the bird been eating and drinking, if at all.
Eating normal feed, some free ranging, some mealworms
8) How does the poop look? Normal? Bloody? Runny? etc.
Started off light brown when symptoms first noticed - has gotten better and is close to normal now.
9) What has been the treatment you have administered so far?
Refreshed water, purchased new waterer for easier access to water. As per son (much more experienced than me) I fed him some raw egg. Roo ate this eagerly and I have followed up with same two more times.
10 ) What is your intent as far as treatment? For example, do you want to treat completely yourself, or do you need help in stabilizing the bird til you can get to a vet?
Self Treatment.
11) If you have a picture of the wound or condition, please post it. It may help.
See attached. Tried to post video but it didn't work.
12) Describe the housing/bedding in use
Small coop shared with two hens of same age, only inside when raining and at night. Pine bedding. Fenced in 25 x 25 ft pen, under pine trees.
Our Roo is doing better - not panting as much (think he was too warm and the water wasn't fresh enough) - but he's still more lethargic than usual. He did come out to free range with the girls but once he went back into the pen he promptly sat back down.
What should I be looking for in his behavior? Son says to watch for him tucking head under wing and looking more pale than usual?
Thanks!
