Chooks have been digging up a garden bed, how long before it's ok for vegetables?

Hi all!

We've had a terribly overgrown garden bed that we let the chooks into to clean it up.

So that's good. But as expected, they'd have also been pooping into it, etc.

What I'm intending to do now is to put ~1m3 of veggie bed soil into it, let it sit for about a month, and then start planting some passionfruit vines along it.

What I'm trying to find out is whether the existing chicken poo is going to be problematic. In my mind, it'd be ~10cm under the new soil, and it'd have about a month to settle before plants go in, so it'd be.... ok?

So yes, looking for opinions.

Thank you!

There are 2 concerns with animal pop:

1. Transmission of disease to humans. If fresh (non composted) manure gets on fresh produce then it can sicken a human. This can happen with water splashing up onto to fruit/veg, for example. And as anyone knows done veg are hard to resist munching on fresh from the garden (peas or strawberries for example).

2. Too strong, will burn your plants. Too much “hot” manure (non-composted) can stunt or kill your plants.

Overall, just pay attention to point 1 if you are planting this fall. Sounds like 2 will not be an issue.
