Choosing Chickens for Houston Backyard

With the exception of some like the brahmas, who do very well in the heat and humidity we have here in Arkansas.

Hi, I am pretty close to Houston also. About 20 minutes and I am there. We have some Cuckoo Marans, they do well in heat and really don't like cold weather so they match to our climate. They are still too young to lay but we'll see. They are supposed to have really dark brown eggs.

They did great during Ike. When it gets super hot I will put a fan in the coop and give them cold watermelon.

We are going to go to Ideal next time, we will probally just drive it. Hopefully avoid some of the shipping stress.

Welcome to BYC:D

I'm in Dallas (city limits) and I have two Americaunas-- about to add a third one. Good luck to you down there in Houston!

CA2TX2TN I too live Houstonish, I am new to chickens too. I have ordered from Ideal and they ship on the 29th of this month. I got 5 Gold Sex-Links, 5 brown sex-links, 5 black sex-links, and 5 red sex-links. I dunno what color eggs they are going to lay. Anyway, when I get the chicks (in a few days) I will post pics and I will let you know what I think of Ideal.

Be warned, this darn site will have you building brooders, building (or buying) chicken coops, cooking speacial meals for chickens, talking chicken, and at the very least you will be eggcited the whole darn time. I didnt even want chickens. I started out looking for a cattle forum cause we are going to do cattle in March of next year and I accidently found this site.

Chickens originated in hot jungle climates, so there are lots of varieties that are good for hot regions. I always heard, the bigger the comb, the more heat tolerant, although I'm not sure that's always true...

That's great! Sounds like I've got a number of breed options. Now I've got to get started on my brooder and coop. Not so sure about the Turkens, but they're definitely 'Redneck Chickens"!
