Christian Topic: Bible Translations - which do you like?

Ok, just looked it up, my ignorance I guess. I always read the KJV 1611
as the standard. Bad Catholic PC, BAD!

The Catholic church produces it's own books and texts for Sunday mass
and religeous education. One of the things I always liked about some
other churches is the pastor tells the follower to open to a particular
passage from their and preaches from that. That's cool.

Now I asked my 8 year old Catholic school boy son and he said they
use the Good News Bible and the New American Bible in his class.

Back to my original point. Science is finally catching up to us! If you consider your faith to be real, you will need something real to back it up with, and that is how science ties into religion.


Take this for example. Scientist have done tests on evolution and on whether or not it is possible. What they have discovered is that if you take, say, a chimps DNA, and alter it in such a way that it is more aligned with human DNA, you will get one of two results.

Result A: a horribly deformed chimp incapable of reproducing

or

Result B: a dead chimp

Our DNA simply makes evolution impossible, and SCIENCE has proved that for us.

That is just one of many examples, but I think you get my point, so it's off the soapbox I go.

To put this post more on topic: I completely agree with Cyn. The KJV is the ONLY version that has been translated word for word from the original Greek. That and it uses neat words, like "contrariwise"

Nope, gotta disagree with you - its still Darwinism you're discussing when you pull evolution into the mix. You either believe in Creation or you dont... end of story. We're not talking about HOW something works (i.e., your DNA example) we're talking about how WE got here

Not to go off topic and start an evolution debate but I believe in
evolution. In fact, I view evolution AS creationilism. Things are
evolving around us all the time but they still have God's fingerprints
all over them.

The more I studied science the more I realized that we are not some
random event. Because of science I moved from athiesm to agnosticism.
Then, because of the intervention on the Holy Spirit in my life I returned
to Christianity.

I'm not trying to debate I'm just explaining my own beliefs and know
of a lot of scientists who believe in God. Wasn't Einstein trying to find
God when he was looking for the theory of relativity and other of his
great discoveries. Stephen Hawkinhs, developer of the Big Bang Theory,
has said "When I look into the big bang I see the eyes of God".

I have always been raised as you either believe in Creation or you dont, there is no "grey" area - its God created it all and science doesnt play into it.

I'm not being disrespectful, please know that - I'm just not understanding - but then again, I've been out of church for a while and just came back in not many years ago. I'm not saying Scientist dont believe in God..that seems to be how its being viewed and thats not what I mean at all. However, that being said, our church views Creation as creation and evolution as evolution, no matter how you look at it - and doesnt the bible as well? Again, is there something new I"m not aware of?

With all due respect I don't really care what "Your Church" or "My Church"
promotes on this issue. I care about what I see with my own eyes, feel
with my own heart, and read in the Bible, especially the Gospels, and learn
from modern science, which won't be modern in a few years.

Darwinism has become a religeon to some and a movement to others.
Many of his theories have been proven wrong and many right. He was
just a guy.

PC - I understand your point and views, and I guess it all comes down to how someone was raised really. You admitted you were an athiest, then agnostic, then you came into religion - so I can definately see where you're coming from.

I dont know - I have just always been raised "by the book" - In the beginning God Created......7 days.. and let there be light

The NAB is the current Bible endorsed by the Bishops and the one that our Mass scripture readings are taken from. It is really easy to read and all that, but I love the beautiful language of the D-R and I wish that it was still used as the official Bible. There's something about that older, more formal English that is elevating and puts us in the frame of mind that we are reading something special.

Oh and PC - I agree with you on evolution. All of science is put there by God for us to discover how He made the world work. This is what the Church teaches as well.

I was raised a devout Catholic. I was an Alter Boy, a reader at Mass, and
even taught for a year. Then one day I woke up and didn't believe any
more. 16 year old "know it all" arrogance and close mindedness had
a very bad affect on my life. Many Christian friends, most who held the
same views on Creationalism that you do, never gave up on me and never
stopped praying either.

We are all brothers and sisters in Christ.
