Christmas 2014 Hatch-a-Long (12-25-14)

Well, I'm sure everyones heard the phrase "do not assist your eggs." Well I didn't assist the ones that pipped at the wrong end last night. All three of them died. It seems the membrane suffocated them, I feel terrible. They had absorbed all of the yolk, they were healthy!

Oh well, have a merry Christmas everyone.

Thanks for posting. I was debating "helping" mine. The one that hatched on its own came out before two others that pipped earlier. There was no change in the pip size or evidence of zipping after 12 hours. After reading your post I decided to intervene. I tried the first pipped egg first. It had already died. :( fortunately, the 2nd hadn't died yet. I gave it a little help by removing a little shell and outer membrane around the head and put it back in the incubator. It got out on its own after that. A third chick has done the same: pipped last night and hasn't done a thing since. I did the same for it about an hour ago and it looks like it is doing well pushing Itself out now. Despite trying to keep the humidity up, the membranes on all of them looked dry and tough. I've increased the humidity even more. I'm not seeing any more action in there. I know it's only day 20, but now I'm nervous the ones who haven't pipped are going to be shrink wrapped. But even if I don't get any more, I'm so thankful that there are 3 chicks out of this hatch!

Glad you got a few chicks to hatch :) good luck on the rest.

Congrats to those with babies! :jumpy They are all so cute! My condolences to any that were lost.

Two of the chicks in cups (we're absorbing yolks) got knocked over by a chick who escaped her own cup. I didn't notice this till later, but the one other chick already ended up breaking her yolk open. In conclusion, my bators now a mess. I still have those three chicks in there, the would for sure get a yolk infection in the brooder. I need to get antibiotic cream tomorrow.

My three week and a half old chicks are enjoying the company of the Christmas eve chicks and the single christmas hatcher. They are like the babysitters, they taught all of the new chicks how to eat, drink, make a mess... The little chicks try to hide under the older chicks like they are their parents lol. There's only one blonde chick in the brooder so far. The Christmas chick, has short legs, and looks very plump :lau

Last thing, I have one egg that has not even internally pipped. When I was tossing any eggs that had gone bad, I slightly cracked this ones she'll by the air cell to see if it was still okay, and it was. So back in the bator it went. Guess I'll have a chick tomorrow as well I hope.

Okay, the chicks did not have water for several hours today because the waterer they had, had a small crack in it... And so did my other plastic one and the metal one is rusting. So some hot glue later the crack has been covered so it will be used until I can get to town and buy some new ones. But boy, the ones that knew what it was were all over it showing the new ones how to drink! Now hopefully I wont wake up to them having wet bedding again

Okay, bator update. There are only 4 eggs left, no internal pips in 3 of them still. And the one that is pipped is taking it's sweet time, I spiked the humidity so it wont get shrink wrapped.

Cute chicks!! @bantambury

Update on my babies: I have had 8 total hatch so far, 3 yesterday, 5 today. 1 more is on its way out. Some I have assisted, but a few needed no help after I got the humidity up higher. So far, 5 are from the purchased eggs, and 3 (plus the one still hatching) are from my own chickens. Yay! Does that make me a grandma? I have 4 more eggs still unpipped.

Congrats! Hopefully the other 4 do something. All my eggs are from my chickens

I'll just stick with chick-sitter/raiser, it's easier because then you don't have to worry about ever being a grandma, or a great grandma, and so on.
