Christmas chickens are coming!

Thinking of eventually building a hardware cloth open air coop with a roof because summers are so brutal here but needs to be hurricane resistant so it doesn’t blow away.

Welcome to BYC.

You will probably want to look at this thread about a Texas open-air coop.

Do you need to think flooding as well as wind? If so, you'll want to make some elevated platforms that would serve as high-water refuges and double as shade structures the rest of the year.

Welcome! I also started with a pair of rental hens this summer. It was a great way to learn and be sure chicken keeping is for me. I now have my own small flock.

You are asking excellent questions. In addition to the BYC forum, I recommend getting a copy of The Chicken Chick's Guide to Backyard Chickens by Kathy Shea Mormino. It's an excellent reference for beginners.

My one piece of unsolicited advice is take your time making decisions about a permanent coop/run. Every time I saw something new I said "Ooh, I want to do that!" I cycled through many ideas before I landed on the set up I have, and on the breeds in my flock.

One more thing--don't underestimate predators! Take all advice.

Good luck!

cool thanks! Yes in Houston, flooding is always a worry. We will be building up a big raised bed in the back with drainage to build the coop on to avoid common flash flood day issues but I think the raised platform idea is definitely a good one to add as a precaution. Thanks!
