Christmas chickens are coming!

Welcome! I also started with a pair of rental hens this summer. It was a great way to learn and be sure chicken keeping is for me. I now have my own small flock.

You are asking excellent questions. In addition to the BYC forum, I recommend getting a copy of The Chicken Chick's Guide to Backyard Chickens by Kathy Shea Mormino. It's an excellent reference for beginners.

My one piece of unsolicited advice is take your time making decisions about a permanent coop/run. Every time I saw something new I said "Ooh, I want to do that!" I cycled through many ideas before I landed on the set up I have, and on the breeds in my flock.

One more thing--don't underestimate predators! Take all advice.

Good luck!
Thanks, you are the first previous renter I’ve met. I will check out the book you suggested and will try not to make too many decisions until we have more experience with the hens and have learned some more. Already learning a lot on here!
