Christmas in October block Swap

My dog feet will not drop so I was told to put some tape over them it will help with free motion tho I have not tried that yet, anyone else hear that? I wonder about the tape stickyness and regular sewing if it will make a difference?
I haven't tried that trick and it's not something I'm likely to either. Too sticky and whatnot to be getting into the feed dogs... no no no. Not for me!

You can buy a plate for mending that fits over the feed dogs of some machines that will let you FMQ very easy. Try checking sites for your sewing machines. Hope this helps some.

I do not drop my feed dog, if I quilt on my domestic machine, and like it better that way. Maybe try it? Many folks with antique machines do not drop the feed dog either.

Yes this or tape an old credit card over the feed dogs. Like I mentioned above many folks leave the feed dogs up and quilt that way.

There is a wonderful quilter here called Ferret, yes Ferret. She used to be a rocket scientist. She does amazing work with a long arm but also teaches with a domestic. Rosie did a course with her last year. She doesn't drop the feed dogs and Rosie reckons that she, Rosie I mean, found this much better. Rosie is in Liverpool at the moment watching the three Cunard Queen ships, but when she comes back she can tell you herself.

Thanks Ladies! My feed dogs do drop on my new machine. I keep tweaking my tension, but still see knots either one side or the other. I may go ahead and try it with my feed dog up. What size needle do you all use to free motion stitch? I have a 90/14 on now, I don't have any 80's. I have 100's. Going to research needle sizes and fabric again. I just always use the 90. I have my old machine that feed dogs do not drop. It has a cover that snaps over them. I tried fm on it, but didn't think it was very smooth. I am going back and try it again as I like the way my old one sews better than the new one. Will let you all know how it goes.

Lorri Kennedy of Inbox Jaunt Quilts.com (a great site) says to match your needle size to your thread.
80/12 needle to 50wt thread. 90/14 needle to 40or35wt thread. I have just started to try this and can see a small difference.
I need more practice at FMQ for sure.

Rosie is taking a lot of vacations here lately, we need to have a talk with her

You just have to get used to the new machine, before long you will love it
