Oh I love this! There was an old guy back home named Noel, pronounced like Nole though, but he raised race horses (had some track record holders) and raised and trained Kelpies to herd sheep, he was an amazing dog trainer. Great memories there

My eyes are still recovering if only I had a 3d printer... I could design a fitter that would set on top of the flashlight and hold the egg.

I have CRAZY news! I'm excited and also kinda wondering where my good sense went there is a breeder of show silkies 3 hours away that just had to liquidate their flock because they have to move ASAP from the sounds of it. This is an amazing opportunity for me to get show quality foundation stock. So... I have purchased 4 black and 4 splash chicks that are 4 weeks old, we'll be picking them up Friday afternoon. Hubby is thrilled ok maybe not thrilled, but he is supportive so that's just as good but the really crazy part, she has 6 splash eggs in the incubator 11 days from hatching and was wondering what to do as she has to move on Saturday. So, I'll be bringing these little ones back and popping them into my already warm and cozy incubator, how handy is that!?! And also pretty crazy!!! I hope all 6 make it because what a Christmas miracle story! "You'll never believe it, but when I was an embryo life circumstances forced me to take a 3 hour journey to a new incubator. There, I was continued to be loved, so I grew and thrived and hatched just a few short days later!"

Do yall have any advice on this late stage transport? She will put them with damp papertowels and heat packs. In the 3 hours do I need to rotate them? Once I get home I'm thinking they need to go straight into the incubator, but when do I candle them to be sure they made the journey safely? Saturday, Sunday, or do I just wait to do a final candle on lockdown day? They will have 5 or 6 days to hatch when I get them. I'll find out from the lady for sure, she sounds like a wonderful person, she was so great to message with, I'm excited to meet her. Maybe later down the road if she can have chickens again I'll have done good enough with her bloodline that I can get some show quality birds back to her.

I'm not sure about showing, I wasn't planning on it but I was hoping to sell birds to people who would then show them. I've never shown chickens, the local fair allows adult entries but this last year I went through the barn and saw sick chickens in there, one even had bubbles in its eye I have a friend in CO who was rasing birds to show, she went to a show and her bird brought back some form of leukosis I think it was, wiped out her whole flock. I'm really nervous about the exposure.

I have never gone where you are about to go, but if I were going to drive eggs 3 hours too pop into my incubator...

I would bring an egg carton to put the eggs in and find some sort of insulating bag to put the carton in to retain heat. I have this hot/cold bag I got from Walmart years ago and it really holds in the cold or heat. If you have any of those Hot Hands things, throw them in there too. After putting these in the bag, I'd wrap the bag in a blanket. Be extremely delicate the entire time, set them on the back seat and leave them there till you get home. Now keep in mind, the jiggling of the road could cause air bubbles just as normal shipping does with shipped eggs. Its possible some of these embryos could quit because of the movement. I don't think being out of the incubator will hurt anything, hens often get off the nest for hours and eggs go cold. Its the jiggling that concerns me. When you get home, if the eggs are the least bit warm, I'd let them rest on the counter, in the bag, for an hour before putting them in the incubator, just to let things settle. I would skip candling for a day or so just so there is less stress on the embryos. If they are going to quit, it will probably be a day or two later.

Thank you all for the support! I'm still feeling a bit mad for attempting this, but if she didn't have anyone else to take them, I'm happy to at least give them a chance!

I'm wondering about pre-heating a NR360, wrapping it in a towel to help hold in some heat and plugging it into the truck then monitoring the temp on the way there, having an egg carton in it to set the eggs to keep them stable, and then just hoping for Christmas miracles ️

Oh my, I am so excited for you!

I am no expert, but what I would do since she is already sending heat packs is just put those eggs in a carton if she didn't, then in a box and wrap that box in a comforter to insulate, it and another comforter folded up to sit the box on to cushion it. I wouldn't bother turning them or doing anything to them but getting them home. I would put them in the incubator pronto and let them settle there for a day before you candle.
