Cinco De Mayo Chicks!

Congradulations Micki! That's so exciting! Now the real fun begins. Let me know how they are doing.

I am still waiting. I even gave them a pep talk last night. Trying to encourage them to at least start one hole by morning. Still nothing. I'm trying to remember that today is DAY 21.

Today is the only day this week that I have to go somewhere too. So, maybe it will happen while I'm out.

I asked husband last night if it would be wrong to go and buy peeps tomorrow if none hatch...of course he said yes. Party pooper.

Ok...it's 4:00 and still nothing. I'm wondering if they are waiting for me to start some kind of clucking.

I set them on April 14 at 1:15 or so. It has been a solid 21 days. I can't think of anything that went wrong. How long should I wait before calling it quits and starting the next batch? Should I open them?

Oh, I had hoped for at least one out of the five...but then I'd have to keep one chick alive all by itself. Not so fun. So then I hoped for two. That's fair.

Ugggggggg!

My daughter says to toss them and start over. I think she's just disappointed. Husband says keep them for three more days.

Any thoughts?????

I would candle and see what is going on in there. It won't hurt them, it will just give you some sort of idea on whether or not they are still viable.

I have 1 pipped and starting to zip, but none of the others have done anything!

I dropped off 14 eggs on Apr 14th. The class put them in the next day. So tomorrow will be day 21?

Nothing yet. No rocking, peeping, cracks....just nothing. I'm not sure who the wait is killing more, the kids, the teacher or myself. LOL

The kids all made little foam baby chick picture frames.

That is adorable!!!!

I just picked up 2 chicks today that were hatched in a classroom and they had a big chart on the black board with hand drawn pictures of what each chick looked like, what color egg it came out of and whether they thought it they were boys or girls!

I think it is so good for kids to see the process of hatching chicks!!

Oh, BEC that's so wonderful! I bet you are excited! I hope the little one does well.

I will try the candling. I'm not really sure I understand how to do it so I haven't. I just let them be. Sure would like to know what's going on in there though.

Keep you posted...Still waiting.

My daughter's class hatched eggs several weeks ago. I think 9 out of the 13 hatched. She wanted to do her own so bad. Well, we have 41 more to do and hopfully a Sebright hen that will do her own. We're on egg 7 in that nest. I don't know if she will brood or not.

It's a crazy crazy chicken world.

I am excited, but now nervous because I just went out to check and it is partially zipped, but I think the Momma hen pecked some of the shell away and there is blood from the unabsorbed veins. The baby is moving and still working, but looks like some of the membrane is stuck on him/her. I hope it makes it out ok!

For a quick candling, what I do is, I take a small bright flashlight, put it in my left hand, cup my hand around the end, then put the egg in the end of my hand while holding it with your right hand. It gives you a quick look so you can get some sort of idea as to what is going on in there. You put the fat end of the egg to your hand with the flash light. You can kind of rotate it slowly to see different angles.

I hope your chick is ok. These birds are going to give me gray hairs!

I know you can use warm water to wipe the chick if it has anything stuck on it. Best wishes. Keep me up to date.

Yay!!!

You must be so excited!!! Your daughter is going to be thrilled when she gets up in the morning. I wouldn't be surprised if they don;t hatch until the morning!

As for my baby, Lolita, she is ok but has an unabsorbed yolk! I went out to check on her and saw that she was stuck. The membrane was dried onto her and she couldn't move, I took off the dried up parts and she broke free but when she came out, she was still attached and has an unabsorbed yolk. She is back under her mom, nice and warm. I hope she is ok!

I did a search on here and saw that a lot of babies make it just fine, so I am hoping she is one of them! No other pips yet, so it looks like I am only getting one Cinco De Mayo baby, the others will come whenever they want I guess
