City Chicken Keepers, I Need Advise

I'd wait until the law is actually changed (maybe it has?) so you don't put it's passing in jeopardy.

Oh yes Aart, I fully intend to wait until it's officially legal, we've lived her since April and I've been waiting and waiting. Our second city meeting is this evening and the first was an overwhelming YES! So as long as this one also goes well they will be legal as of tomorrow!
And thanks everyone for your input. The pullets I have my eye on are Easter eggers and other "fat bottom" (I love that

) mixed breeds, I have a thing for mutts, what can I say? I think I'm going to go ahead and try them, once the law is passed of course. I'll quarantine them to coop & run for a couple weeks and clip wings closely and hope they stay home. If they decide to try it I can always extend the run to a suitable size, our back yard is plenty big enough

The longer you let them "free range" the more likely they are to get bored, try to explore and get into the neighbors yard. If our chickens are left to their own devices for more than about an hour without a check in (literally walking through the back to remind them you're there) they will start "flapping" up onto the walls to see whats on the other side

Thanks for asking, so busy with the holidays! The meeting planning and zoning meeting went great, as did the city council meeting, but Now they've got to vote it in with the board of aldermen. (It has been 100% unopposed, the list of 20 stipulations we'll have to meet leaves no room for anyone to argue) But, they don't meet again until January 18th. Urg! Then it will be a go. If the pullets I like are sold by then I'll see what's available near by but could end up having to wait for hatchery chicks. Hope not.

I'll keep that suggestion in mind, but our back yard is fairly decent sized, not much smaller than the portion of our land that our actual free range birds stuck to. We'll get 3 strikes before we loose our personal right to own them if we break any rules, so if they ever escape they'll get a big huge covered run.

When you get those birds, and clip wings, you will only need to clip one side.

We live in the suburbs with a yard of about 1500 square feet of space for our 3 pullets (who aren't actually allowed in our neighborhood, strictly speaking). The fence is definitely not 6 feet, probably about 4 feet, and they've never shown any interest at all in trying to fly over. Their wings aren't clipped, and I don't plan to clip them ever unless it becomes a problem.

I did have a problem with my two young White Leghorns flying out of the yard, they are such a light birds and easily jumped the six foot fence. Several times they were on the neighbors roof. So I trimmed both wings. Never had them fly out again. When the flight feathers grow out again I'll see what happens, they are bigger now so they might not want to fly out. My Red sex links never tried to get out.
