City Chickens in Liverpool

Shaun, Sorry I responded and missed the tragic news about your girls.

Don't give up. This is so good for your children to learn about chickens and being attached to them. Get some more and make them safe, join the rest of us eccentric Brits keeping chickens our gardens.

My children are grown up and gone (Almost anyway) but my neighbours children are loving my chickens and really enjoy the eggs for cakes and breakfast...lol.

Sorry for the lesson you had to learn but now you are all wiser and I am sure the dog will learn something too.

Jena.

Thank you all for your very kind and encouraging words, we have decided to reinforce the coop & run and then we are going to get some new birds after the Christmas holidays.

Thanks,
Shaun

Shana when you do take your dogs one at a time when they are tired or calm and hold a chicken in your lap (assuming the chicken is quite tame) and pet the chicken cooing to it. Have someone totally in control of the dog there on a down and let them know that this too is your pet and very much loved by you. Make it a big love in unless the dog lunges, then dominate it and make it lay back down. When the dog is looking calm and accepting (it might take a bit) allow the dog to sniff the chicken all over and even lick it as long as it's gentle and respectful, if not put it back on a down. Often dogs go after chickens just because they have no idea what that flappy thing is, and they grab it to find out. Then it's too late, the damage is done. I have solved a few herding dogs chicken chasing this way, and know other dogs have been too. They need to know these are yours, if they act too interested say NO! sternly, but do let them totally get to know the chickens so they have no curiosity to satisfy should they get out again.

Sorry for your loss.
