I am very new to chickens. I've ate several, but never really touched a chicken before. I have had people give me fresh farm eggs.

I have always lived in the city, until a few years ago. The property is a little strange. The front yard is in the city limits (of a very small town) and the back is considered in the county. Weird, stuff like I can shoot a gun in the back yard, but it's frowned upon shotting in the front yard. We have almost a full acre of land, and hubby and I got the property when his father passed away. So my husband is used to country life, but I wasn't. The house and land have sort of taken me over, I even started canning. lol

The chicken bug got me this spring, and we got our first babies a few days before Easter (3 ducks and 8 chickens.) I also couldn't help it, and got some more babies last week.

I'm still not good on the breads yet, but thankfully the lady at the store was awsome in helping us out. At one point I found one that I thought was cute and she let me know I didn't want that one because after six months it gets too big and their legs give out. She helped me pick all my babies. One we named Phill ok, my daughter named him Phill because he looked just like the dancing chick Phill on Hop. The lady at Atwoods said he would be my "big boy" and he is. He is the biggest of all my babies.

The first run of babies I'm not really sure what breeds we got. I know at least one of the ducks are Mallards because hubby just had to have one. :)

My newer babies the store got in some fancies, and she let me know what they were, I have one bleach blonde Silkie. It's so cute with the little fuzzy feathers on the toes.

I also have some Polish and one Silver Laced Polish. I also got three which I think she called Americans, the are my favorites, they look like little owls, my daughter thinks they look like chipmunks due to the markins on them. They are so cute!!!!

I found backyard chickens when I was digging for info on how to take care of my new babies, and what kind of coops to build.

I know that we have some time before they are ready to be out in the yard. Right now we have taken the back part of our garage and made it into a nursery for the babies. Worked out really good! As my 3 year old son kept waiting until my back was turned, then he would sneak them into his room.

I'm sure most of you could tell what kind of breads I acatually have, I am very much a newbie to all of this. I've been reading library books, and even telling my husband some things he didn't know about chickens. I guess I've gone chicken crazy!

My family consists of myself, my hubby, my 8 year old daughter and 3 year old son. We have two cats, one of who has found the nursery and likes to sit by it staring at my babies. I shoo him out fast.
We do plan on raising the chickens for eggs, to breed and to eat. I am starting to worry that I'm getting to attached to my babies already.

Here is a pic of the nursery and my babies:
