City shouldn’t allow residents to keep chickens??? - Please help!!!

I think about when I lived in a development and the neighbor's would put their dogs out and they would bark and bark and bark for hours.

A few chickens won't hurt anybody.

Why is every one downing roosters? I have 4 and they make far less noise than: the neighbors free range unspayed cats, parrots from the next housing development, and the neighbors dogs. I am heading over to that page to make a post as well, hope it gets posted.

I agree for the most part about roos, I choose to have them myself… BUT!! Some things that affect this issue are:

1) not all roosters are pleasant, and owners aren’t always good at controlling them.

2) not all neighbors want to hear the cheerful morning chorus that I and many others welcome.

3) some irresponsible people have poisoned this well for others by keeping animals for reasons other than pets, meat, or husbandry (we aren't supposed to discuss cockfighting but..... ) ---this means that police and animal control would want to be checking on any cock-a-doodle-doos reported by neighbors, which does increase management and personnel issues.

By keeping only hens included in these questions, it soothes ruffled feathers on the part of city councils, and eases the process that much more, increasing the chance that people will get to keep their poultry. This is of course just my opinion, others with more experience in this subject might have more insight.

[edit] once you have the town council and your neighbors won over, a nice roo would likely go under the radar and unnoticed!! *shifty eyes* I didn't really say that did I?

I watched the PBS Natural History of Chickens and the bit about the rooster farm. I admit if I lived next to a LOT of roosters it would probably get on my nerves. It would bother me a lot more if I thought they were being raised for blood sport.

I think that anyone who would raise roosters in a city should be thrown OUT of the city, followed by his/her rooster(s)'s being butchered and given to the poor.
I also think that newspapers who have jounalists who write such tripe as what this paper printed should be fired and/or the "news"paper put out of business. I didn't and wouldn't reply.
There's just no excuse for not allowing any responsible person to have a few hens any more than there's being no excuse for not allowing responsible people to have dogs and cats.

Tis just a sham I couldn't tell them what I really wanted to. I heard on the radio the other day that some city in Mich. is allowing people to have four hens within the city limits. And now these (be nice john) people want to stop those living there from owning chickens. They should say a little prayer that I never have to move there.

[EDIT] Never Mind! I went to the original link and searched on 'chickens' and boy has there been a STINK!!! I'd bet our chicken coops all smell better than the mess that's going on in the city. It looks like the next city council meeting is actually in 3 days on the 9th, so that's when we'll really find out more! WOW!!!
