Hello everyone. I'm starting a new backyard flock with mostly Delawares but added a few Black Copper Marans because I think they are interesting. For the last several years, I've kept ISA Browns for eggs and raised meat birds in a chicken tractor. Now I'm building another separate coop and run, to go alongside my existing arrangement. My new idea is keeping a Delaware rooster, with some of the hens, to get fertilized eggs for hatching. I have the dedicated space available and want to compost my chicken litter for use in my backyard nursery. My goal is to keep about a dozen birds and want to process about 16 for meat each year. 10 years ago, I had a couple Buff Orpingtons, Barred Rocks, Wyandots and Rhode Island Reds. I gained experience with keeping roosters too. I live in western NY just outside the village limits and have about 5 acres.

Since I enjoy building things, constructing a new coop is fun and exciting for me. I will be looking at BYC for ideas and advice!

Greetings & Salutations. Welcome.

Great that you are talented in constructing a coop. We have 3 ISAs and boy do they produce eggs! One of them is 2 and she still lays about 5 a week.

Pleased you joined our community. A wonderful place to Learn and have Fun.
