CL experience selling birds and personal safety

WOW, Ranchhand! Scary story and I'm so sorry about your birds. That has to be a very unnerving feeling (in addition to losing the birds). And it's stories like those that keep me from letting strangers come to my home.

I tell people because of biosecurity that they can not come in the chicken yard. I have not had any problems. I worry more about going to another persons place to get something thats why I always take someone with me. So far no problems. I have a lady coming Satuday to get my Delaware roo. He will have 15 ladies. So far I have had very good luck giving awat my roos on CL

Yep, this is why we have a totally closed flock. I ALWAYS meet people at a McD's 15 minutes from our house. I can take pics of our flock if people would like. (That and I'm parinoid about my birds getting sick!)

In this day and time with all the horror stories out there from the insane fringe of our society, I would exercise extreme caution about letting people I did not know come to my home...especially women who are home alone...there is just too much documentation on stalkers and wing nuts looking for an easy score...I have four Dobermans at my back and I often pack when I am outside working...I live alone and have been the recipient of crazy behavior from others into and including death threats, torching my house, killing my dogs...please be careful...

Although I will let people come to the house- there are a few things I do to keep down weirdness:

Screened calls for overall "creepiness"

Turning, winding roads (no quick getaways) and neighbors

Anxious, barking dogs that don't care for strangers

Tall husband

A separate "quarantine/sale" coop in the garage, so that people are not allowed access to my main yard.

i would just email him a photo of some of your birds that doesnt show much if any landscape detail and explain its for biosecurity and you dont allow anyone to visit your pens. but the more he insists the more cautious id be. I wouldnt think nice good chicken folk would object to meeting away from your property. or if you had a crate take a couple of birds to show him but keep them in your car if you feel you would want to meet up with him for a mutual exchange

I should add that while that was a very negative experience I had with the weirdo, the good experiences far outweigh it. I advertise on CL a good bit and rarely have someone get out of hand. I even made a deal with a woman once, for a chair I was selling- she heard my roosters and it turns out she's a member of BYC, too!

He's probably just being an enthusiastic chicken-owner and wants to see others' set-ups. Can't say for sure, but sounds like he's just not aware of how it comes across. Although, I would STILL meet him elsewhere for your own peace of mind. You can never be sure.

I did kind of the same thing to someone recently. Found out that we live near each other and asked to come over to see their set-up. Although I am female and he was male. Sometimes I think our love and enthusiasm for chickens clouds over our thoughts of safety.

(BTW, the man and his wife did allow me to come see their set-up and none of us turned out to be crazy killers lol)

I emailed back and said we would have to meet at the store, as planned. No further requests from him other than what kind of car I'm driving. I do think he's 'ok', not creepy, just maybe a bit eager/forward.
