I color my own hair at home with clairol natural instinct. It washes out in about 20 shampoos. I used a color different from the one I always use yesterday and it's a little to red and brassy for me. Do I have to wait for it to wash out, or can I color on top of it with the natural I brown color I always use? The hot line will be open Monday, but I thought some of you might know the answer.

Wash it with Dawn dish soap and then use the brown. It was worked for me. When you wash your hair do not use real hot water because my hair dresser says it makes red wash out faster then any other color. This is all the time not just now.

My red color usually just washes out on it's own. After about three washes, the bright red usually comes out and I'm left with a duller auburn. That's the color I actually like, so I just wait the three washes.

If you're not terribly particular about your hair like I am, I would just recommend washing it with a heavier shampoo (Something NOT for treated hair) and waiting a few days for it to wash out. I'm not such a big fan of dying over dye just because it can be rough on the hair.

You counter too much Red with Green , so buy Ash brown color! I am also a hairdresser. hope this helps.

Call the toll free number on the box. The Clairol customer service is great! My 88 yr old mother somehow dyed her silver hair, Bozo the Clown orange! I had to go to three drugstores to get two boxes to fix it. Clairol told me what to get, it worked!! Good luck!

Thanks Micah! That's exactly what I did. I went and purchased medium ash brown. It looks a lot better and is about the dark brown color I wanted. When I looked at it in the sun on the deck I still see a good bit of red/orange, but I'm hoping it will settle down. Before I corrected it it had almost a maroon tint to it. At least it's a lot better than it was. I took some pictures of the color after I corrected it with the ash brown. One from inside and one in the sun. I wish I thought to take a pic before I corrected it, now that would be funny!

looks really natural to me! I have never dyed my hair and I have a lot of gray temples. If I knew it would look like that, I might be brave enough to try.
