My first rat snuggles, not even from a breeder, lived for 7 and 1/2 years. She was just an average brown rat who would have been snake food had I not traded my evil hamster for her. Best trade I ever made!

Oh yeah I forgot you had that rat that lived that long, that was crazy, Alyssa.

Hermit crabs and guppies. Just a side note, my son's 2nd grade class last year had a guinea pig named Nibbles who died suddenly a couple weeks before the end of school. It was very traumatic, esp for the kids who had no pets of their own or experience with loss. My son was sad, but he had been living with animals for long enough to understand the circle. He was really proud of himself that he was chosen to carry the "coffin" to the burial site. Anyway, I felt so bad for his teacher... I think it was really awful for her. Hope you dont go through that... And yay for animals in the classroom!! My picks are non allergenic and have pretty cool behavior.

I ddint read everyones comments but i agree wiht rats BUT dont get just any ole rats from the petstore unless they've been handled....feeder petstore rats are normally sickly, not handled much (so fearful). HOwever I had a few petstore ratties that made wonderful pets.

Rats are awesome and i canot wait to own them again i used to have a rattery...bred for color, type, and health/longevity......was working on my own pedigree to get them show worthy.

wow Alyssa!!! I wish she was still around to go into a rattie genetic pool, would have made for great geentics at prolonging their lives

Gonna agree here. Rabbits need time out of their cages and lots of room. The rescue we got ours from won't even consider adopting them out to teachers for their classrooms.
I've never owned a rat but was very impressed by several that I met.
A science teacher I work with has small land turtles of some type. Fascinating to watch but I'm not sure if they need more room than they've got in their aquarium.
You can sometimes more unusual pets that need homes on Petfinder.com (chickens included!)

im going ot also suggest coturnix quails

Thanks everyone! You just saved my rabbit. I was gonna take her in because she's so calm and friendly, but your right. I can see a lot of people being alergic to her. I'll suggest a rat. They seem a MUCH MUCH better choice. Hopefully my teacher will understand. (he's also getting a copy of this forum) Would a blue rat work? Their are a bunch of them in the pet stores here. They're not feeders so i think they'd be friendliest. Also we live in the country and everyone has experienced death so i don't think anyone will be traumatized by its death. Lots of people cull animals or raise them for meat, so we're pretty safe.
