Cleaned coop, can I put a mixture of sevin & DE on the floor?

Thought of that......cleaned and changed it just to be safe. My coop is dry but did get wet near the door during a nasty storm cause my DH forgot to put the rubber splash guard on. After the storm we've had nothing but a heat wave with alot of high humidity.....perfect breeding for the little gross things. I feel confident that I've solved the problem.

I use DE all the time, and have not had a problem. I sprinkle it through my coop, mix it with their dusting sand, even dust them directly with it. I do it carefully, but I do use it all the time. I also sprinkle it in their food. Like everything else, we all have our own way of doing things.

That`s the key words, you`ve "not had a problem". I`m not getting personal, or knocking you, but the stuff doesn`t work when wet and I`ve come to believe that folks who swear by DE have "never had a problem". If you do ever have a problem, DE won`t do the job. Save your money...........Pop

I did both and feel totally comfortable. Srayed coop walls lightly with liquid sevin, dusted roosts and sprinkled on floor with powdered sevin. I had some spare DE and sprinkled a little on top then finished off with a nice heaping layer of pine shavings. Thanks everyone for the help.....I feel better about whole pest issue.

I have had my chickens for 2 yrs now and other than a weasel attack, lost 2 hens, the other 4 have not shown any issues. One of them has been sick now for over a week, she is improving but I am thinking that I should start using DE in my outside enclosure. I see my local tractor supply sells it in 20 lb bags and my enclosure is 8x8, any quantity recommendations?

We were noticing a lot of flies in our outdoor run so I sprinkled DE all over the run (we use sand) after the girls went to bed. Then in the morning sprinkled there scratch mix out there and let them stir the DE in the sand. We have only had the random fly since. I had been using it since day one in the coop and never had flies in there. I am convinced that in this application DE worked great. I used no measurements, just sprinkled a nice coating. I am sure it will be beneficial for you also. Good luck!

So Sevin dust is totally safe to use even if the kids go in there? I quit using in my garden years ago because it seemed like it was hard to rinse off the veggies that aren't as easy to wash (like broccoli, cabbage, etc.) and I worried about us ingesting it. I've never even looked at it since then.

Just read this-is it not a concern to anyone?

Carbaryl is a cholinesterase inhibitor and is toxic to humans. It is classified as a likely human carcinogen by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA.

eta: I think I'll start researching permerthrin dust instead. I'd be less worried (I'm a worrier so others that don't worry so much may be okay with something that concerns me).

First, Some say DE is a waste of money and some say it works very well. I consider both to be opinions.

Second, yes, Sevin is a poison. So is permethrin. BUT, Permethrin is much safer to mammals. My hat is off to you for reading labels and being informed rather than just blindly going by recommendations. I've used both but I am not comfortable at all with using Sevin. It did the job and I didn't expire from cancer right away (as you may have guessed), but that's just me. I've also used DE in the coop and it did run all the ants out, nor do I ever see any other bugs in there. The same DE does nothing at all for running those same ants out of anywhere else. So go figure.
