Cleaning Cast Iron

I read what Ranch posted

I, too, avoid any veggie based oils. They are usually obtained using chemical sovents, get gummy/tacky and nasty when heated. Animal fat, I use beef, works wonderful.

After a meal, I use a metal spatula or pampered chef scraper. If still dirtly, let cool...never put water in or it into water when hot, you'll get heat shock. Then I use plain water and a scrubby and get all the food off, reheat, add Coconut oil or fat and wipe out w/a paper towel. Rarely does my food stick, anymore. Although, Fetuccini sauce can be diffcult.

I use the cast iron pans my late grandparents got as wedding gift.
the pans are now 72 years old.

Get the plastic scrapers from The Pampered Chef and you'll never use an SOS pad again.

I do have a pampered chef scraper but I seen a mock up at walmart the other day.

I was told and never use soap on my cast iron.....everything put on it will season in to the pan and you may taste it in your food. My pizza stones from pampered chef are the exact same way.

Oh I got some really nasty ones once.

They look new now though.

I used lemon and salt. I started with table dalt and moved on to rock salt after 3 pans. Just cut a lemon in half (gonna need a couple) and rub it through the salt.

My grandaughters love my cast iron. They use the ones I bought when I moved away from home at 18. My oldest daughter is a clean freak way worse than I used to be and almost threw a skillet out. My grandkids said "NO! grandma can clean it!" They all know the value of cast iron! YEAH!

I love when people get rid of cast iron. hehehe. I usually get it for free.

If it's really bad you can also use sand. YES sand. wet it just a bit and use a soft brush and scrub.

Just make sure to season it. I use coffee filters between mine so the stay nice.

Try the lemon and salt!
