'cleaning' their beaks on the grass -- what is that?

My 8 year-old son wants to know:

We're noticing our cute girls rubbing their beaks on the grass when they're out and about. What is that all about? Are they just tidying themselves up? Or is there something else?

Mine will even wipe on the edge of the hardware cloth.

I wondered this before but got to thinking about it. They sift though there poop with there beeks. Why not have a clean sifter. LOL

Yup! Yogurt and cottage cheese are the worst...or best.

Chickens don't have hands or napkins. They make do with what they've got.
When my chickens were little, my jeans happened to be their favorite napkin.

Wait until they think you are one of them and wipe on your feet. Mine just hate that sticky spaghetti worm residue.

Mine do it all the time, and yes, especially after yogurt.

Sometimes I feel so sorry for them that they don't have arms and hands...they look like they could use them.

we have sand in part of the run and when i gave them yogurt of course they're greedy and kicked the sand in it because they had to be the first one to get it...... they cleaned their beaks for quite some time..... but there were a couple i decided to pick up and clean off for them because they had pink (strawberry yogurt) beak tips covered in sand.... it's kind of cute when they clean up. too bad they don't care that they walk in their own poop and have that all over their legs. lol
