Hey all,
I'm working on a chick about 2 weeks old who has nothing but clear fluid in crop.
Acting listless, just standing not laying down.
Eyes mostly closed.
No nasal discharge or eye 'bubbles'. No cough or strange movements.
I have not seen her poop.
Crop does not smell and seemed to only contain clear fluid (water?) I wouldn't have emptied it but when I picked her up to feel her keel and crop it kinda came out of her mouth so I tipped her head down and massaged it out.
I did see her take some water after I emptied her crop.
I gave mealworms to see if I could spark interest in food and she turned into a normal acting chicken, going nuts and running around with them, eating them, etc. Grit is available.
She is very skinny, I have not witnessed her eating crumble in the last 24 hours of observation.
I will check crop again in a few hours and probably isolate her in a hospital bin so I can see if she's pooping. They are on pine shavings as a bedding.
Recommendations? The only thing I can think of trying that shouldn't hurt, is to give some probiotic or yogurt, add apple cider vinegar to water, isolate and maybe see if I can find a blockage in the crop. If there is one I guess it would be lower down in the system which is not a good outcome for this little chick.
She's from a feed store, her other three sisters are normal and acting fine. They are with chicks I hatched that are about a week older than them.
Thanks for any advice, I'm stumped!
Susan
