Clipping wings- why just one wing?

SJudd --

We had a scare last night when we couldn't find one of our 16-week pullets. I was relieved to find her in the run this morning, waiting to get into the coop, so she must have been high up in a tree where we couldn't see her! So - out came the scissors. Used the diagram as posted but also found a helpful u-tube video. My husband held the chickens upside down by their legs while I spread the wing and clipped. Six wings done in less than six minutes (if you don't count the time spent chasing the little roo around

) It was much easier than I thought and hopefully will keep them closer to earth. This is my first experience with chickens, so if I can do it, you can. I guess you could hold them with one hand and arm and cut with the other, but you might find it a lot easier with a friend.

Thank you gardengrll. The friend who gave me the chickens is really busy right now so not sure I can pester her and my husband is working 6 days a week 13 hours a day so trying not to bug him very much. BUT I will have to bug someone soon, she is getting much more bold about where she goes. She is only 4 months old and the rest of my hens are over a year old and basically too fat to get too far off the ground. I spoiled them a little too much never having chickens before and I think I fed them too much because in the two months I have had them, they got really huge. Back to the point, I will call my friend tonight and see if she has time to stop by tonight. Thanks, again!

I used this diagram to clip my girls wings! I did BOTH wings after we had two of ours go over our 6 foot rock wall! It does take two people though (optimally). One to hold and one to cut! It was easy.
