Clipping wings???

hmm...it doesn't seem like she would be able to get enough lift to clear a fence with both wings clipped. However I solved the problem by locking them in their run, which they used to be able to fly over (6 feet) but now can't get up and over. SO no more clipping required

I'm new to chickens. My chicks are just over 3 weeks old. One managed to fly out of the brooder today with a 3 ft wall. I can't believe she did it considering she doesn't have all her feathers yet. Is it too soon to clip? I'm afraid she'll try again and if I'm not home (like today) she may go all day no food or water. Or worse, the dog may find her before I do. Right now I'm just hoping the trauma of being lost and alone today will keep her in.

We had a similar problem and a hock got our rooster. So we clipped one wing on our flighty girls. If you clip both they can still jump and climb. Google or YouTube clipping wings. You will get great instructions. It Doesn't hurt them. Good luck!

I'm not sure if that's too young to clip. Any way of just covering the brooder? I keep a chicken wire cover on until they move outside. Its amazing how quickly they figure out how to fly...feathers or no!

When should I clip BO and EE feathers? They are 6 weeks old
I guess there's no best time but usually clipping the wing feathers is only practiced on adult chickens. Every time a hen or chick molts it grows new feathers and you have to clip their wings all over again. If you have young birds whose wings you need to clip to keep them in their pen or coop, you need a different or better coop because you will be constantly clipping their wing feathers.

Great stuff! Thanks. Clipping some wings today. Chased them around the scouling neighbors yard too much yesterday. :)
