Cloning Mammoths in Japan

Mammoths would be cool, but I'd rather see live dodos.

Brachiosaurus would be cool to see too, but I guess that they're a bit too big. Maybe some Parasaurolophus? They're cute, in a large and strange way.

Live dodos would be much safer...

So, what are they planning to do once they revive these animals? Stick them in zoos?

It's not nice to mess with mother nature. It's not smart either. Jurassic Park was a cautionary tale, we'd do well to listen.

We don't know what we don't know. And once we find out, it might be too late to undo it. Science and Technology can't save us from everything. Why don't we put our efforts, talents and resources to improving the lives and health of the species of animals and humans we already have?

As the Earth warms we'll actually be pushed into an ice age... so the mammoths will have plenty of new habitat to roam once the entire Northern Hemisphere is covered in ice and snow.

I don't think mammoths would have any problems surviving today.

They could not bring back any parasites, they are just taking dna. That said, most of the parasites we have in the world today are extremely ancient and have been around a long, long time.

I think the mammoth would be pretty comfortable hanging out with elephants. They are similar enough. The mammoth is basically an elephant that was able to manage in cold weather.

And I think what they eat is fairly similar too, based on them having same teeth. They eat very low quality forage.

I think from its surrogate mother, the mammoth would learn to react to humans much as the elephants do. Basically, a nice animal, likes people, but stay out of the pen when it's irritated.

They would probably do very well in large parts of the world. The trick would be creating a new herd in which all the members are not too closely related. DNA would need to be taken from animals from different parts of the world.

As for 'not messing with mother nature'...O.M.G. Man has done nothing but mess with mother nature, cutting down whole forests, changing entire continents. Bringing back the mammoth would be not even on the list compared to what all else has been done.

As long as they do not want to study the T-Rex and Sabertooth have at it. Those 2 I would hate to see running loose today. It would make camping more of an adventure though.

I think it's a shameful display of man's arrogance! It seems to me scientists have screwed up the world enough already.

You like your car, don't you?

What about your smart phone?

Amusement parks with roller coasters?

Something as simple as central AC and heat?

Or what about medications that can send life threatening cancers into remission?

Yeah... science sucks. The world would be a much better place without it.

I will believe it when I see it; I seem to remember talking about this in freshman biology in High School (9 years ago). I’m not opposed to the cloning of a mammoth I’m sure that they could learn something from it. However I don’t see them being able to create a breeding population of mammoths as they would need more specimens to obtain tissue sample from to create any form of genetic diversity to support a population. Plus given the amount of money that it will take to clone a mammoth I doubt that they will be freeing them on the Siberian tundra
