Clops: The Blind Cleft Lid Chick (Updates, Advice, and Discussion Thread)

Odd for sure.
Something went awry when the cells were forming the eyelids.
Could be genetic, could just be an errant anomaly.
How closely does the breeder track their lines?
Could be from too many sibling crosses?
Not sure I'll ask her when I email her about the chicks. I told her I would share pics. It has longer eyelid feathers too or eyelashes, it's so odd. I'll try to get better pics tomorrow.

I'm going to make sure it drinks before I go to bed.

Can she blink and close her eyes completely? If not then it is a problem
Yes she can do both. I think the blind eye wouldn't matter much besides maybe infection if she can't blink to clean it. I did check if she can close both and blink both.

When I interact with her I have to make sure I have her good eye towards me or she flips a lid.

Good news....if she can't blink she risks injury to her eye.... Poor girl....

Personally, I would euthanize.

These problems may or may not eventuate, View attachment 2011971View attachment 2011973despite your dedicated love and care she could end up frustrated at not being able to just be a normal chicken and do normal chicken things. I don't want to be negative but you don't want to go through the heartbreak of 4 months down the track realising that you are going to have to cull her like I had to, my beautiful girl, my buddy, lover of watching endless movies.. 2 years on and I still cry at the mere thought of my lovely girlView attachment 2011980
I'm not sure how she wouldn't be able to do normal chicken things because she can see out of one of her eyes and she is interacting like all the other chicks. I see no disability at this point that would stop her.

What was wrong with the chicken in the pictures?

I'm sorry you had to go through that heartbreak :hugs

Hey I'll take the chick I have 7 yrs experience with chickens I'm in my second year of vet tech school and I have chickens with health problems I don't mind taking her in

I don't mind raising the little oneeven if male I'll figure something out even if the neighbors hate the baby I'll protect it with my life
