clorox in water?

The manager of a farm supply said that when my chicks get well to put a tablespoon of clorox in the gallon water feeder and they would stay healthy. How do you all feel about that? Jean

I don't remember ever reading that suggestion on here. I wouldn't do it personally. Sounds deadly!

I would not want to drink clorox water -

I would prefer to use apple cider vinegar. I think P.K. Theodore suggests using Oxine AH, (15 drops to 1 gallon waer). I've read that Oxine FP, a non-rinse sanitizer, is used by some brewers. [A little OT, Ace Chemical (Acechem.com) says on their website that they sell Oxine FP to the organic food industry and poultry industry. They have Oxine FP for $15/gallon IF you purchase a case of 4, if you just purchase 1 gallon, it is $25.]

sounds like he took the suggestion of putting bleach in your well ( a little bleach with oh say 1000 gallons of water) and "helped" start a new idiotic idea.

Not deadly. Usually the reason one puts clorox in the water is to keep algae from growing. Keeping your waterer out of the sun will help, using ACV will also help. We do use bleach in our big cattle tanks (1 cup to 150 gallons) but, I have never had to use it in the smaller animal dishes. Big tanks with floats on them so they stay full are hard to clean whereas, smaller feeders are easier. If you do have trouble or your water has a high bacteria rate then consider the bleach. I'm not sure I would go as strong as the feed man said though.

Reminds me, we had to treat our well for bacteria using clorine bleach and were told not to drink the water for a good long time after doing it. And the proportion of bleach to water was much less that what the farm supply guy suggested.
I'm now using the unprocessed apple cider vinegar regularly here.
What are your birds sick with?

I think if you just keep your waterer clean you shouldn't have a problem. I know I wouldn't want to drink clorox water. Maybe clean the waterer with bleach and then rinse it really well.
