Thanks very much for the info.

It was the day from he77, and calling someone right away was unfortunately not the highest priority at the time since I knew I had time to deal with that later if need be. After the dog fiasco, I had to race to work, to officially be told my job was ending, then I had to race home and prepare testimony for a long meeting that evening, where I was the central speaker in an attempt to save my property with hectic meetings leading up to that moment with an engineer, a senator and a environmental leader who were also testifying on my behalf. Mayhem does not begin to describe that day or the aftermath in the days since.

****Pause****

The ACO just called. The dog had its rabies shot. They told her they didn't believe their dog had bitten me. What I feared would happen happened and that is that they vengefully told the ACO I had chickens so she just asked me about them. I said I do rescues and critters come and go and she asked me what my town's policy was (she covers other towns too) - I said there's no problem in this town (the ordinance outlaws livestock but the definition of livestock does not list chickens). She said she thinks they'll be moving to outlaw in accord with a policy just adopted by the next town (which says roos not allowed - I have my beloved roo BJ). I changed the subject - we traded a few critter stories and got off the phone.

Judy - WOW, never a dull moment. As I was reading this thread, I was wondering when I was gonna read the part about the neighbor ratting on your chickens.

I hope it goes well for you. Dang people anyhow. Glad your hand is OK.

I would be going over to the law section and doing everything I could to stop that new law from being adopted. I think you have a right to talk before they pass that one. Problem is people don't know what laws are being passed by these boards. They are made up of regular Joe's just like you and me and like all government they sing and vote to their own wishes and wants. Watch that one close so that you can fight it. And in some cases you can get grandfathered in so that if the new law does get passed it will not effect ya, might want to look into that one.

Good luck

I have a feeling that irresponsible dog owners are going to make rhodesian ridgebacks one of the next "problem breeds." It used to be german shepards, then dobermans, then rottweilers, and now pit bulls. Up and coming will be the ridgebacks. Pit bulls are being outlawed in many places (BTW I never met a pit bull I didn't like). So now the idiots of the world are out to ruin the reputation of another breed. Heaven forbid that stupid people not be allowed to have a large breed dog with great strength that they can leave alone in their yard to not socialize and train. It's too bad that people don't have to pass an IQ test before having a pet (or children for that matter). This is not intended as a bash to RR owners that actually bother to socialize, train and confine their dogs.

Cranium excrement dog owners!!!

Crud. I hope that they can grandfather BJ in. Goddess knows he's been through so darned much.

I thought I was busy!
I'm so sorry to be reading such a time for someone that has ALWAYS been so kind and thoughtful!
I hope things take a big turn and start to go your way.
BJ is such a sweet guy and I have loved every story of his good nature that you have shared.
I'm sorry that people aren't as pure as our chickens!
I of course want to send you my best and hope these battles that you've been fighting will soon end on the good side for you!
I'm a dog person but first a people person!
My Best,
Bridget

I have been going through almost the same thing. Back when I first got some chickens I had 1 lil game roo and 2 RIR mix pullets. I knew I would never be able to let them free range so I built them a 5x5 cage untill i could build them another bigger cage It was just regular chicken wire with not floor just a dirt floor. I woke up to go outside to feed my little ones and found a empty cage my heart dropped. I had had problems with the neighbors dogs before but this time they had pushed themselfs under the cage. I found my lil game roo tiny laying lifeless on the ground not aten just killed they just chewed him up. I never found 1 of the rir mixs The other I found with a broken leg and half her wing wore off why they did not kill her IDK!...I was so mad I was crying and I called the police! The cops came and talked to my neighbor and the cop reported back to me that the guy said it wasnt even his dog it was a stray and they called for the dog pound to come get it. I knew this was a lie because this guy had raised that dog from a puppy. I was sitting on my prouch the day he brought the pup home with him. The cop said I could file charges aganist him but there was nothing more he could do because the guy denied the dog was his. I didnt file charges because atleast the dog was gone.

Not but 2 weeks later my aunt had gave me 2 silkies a roo and a hen. I knew to reenforce the cage better and did so. Not long after that I had noticed something had been diggign around the cage and ripping at the bars and bending them. After talking to my GOOD Neighbor she told me about seeing a black dog who belonged to the people who is 2 houses down digging under my chickens cages. I remember what the cop told me he said that chickens are property and you have to do what you have to do to protect your property. So I e-mail the owner of the dog went to school with the girl and everything. I was not rude I just told her everything that had happened and about her dog and if i caught it on my property i would do what I had to do to protect my chickens.

She replied to not hurt her dogs she loved her dog and he was a chicken killer because he had killed some of her uncles chickens. Atleast she was honest. She went on to say he didnt liked to be tied and they owned alot of the property around here and that he could go wherever he wanted to BUT before she ended her letter she said that if he gave me any more problems to contact her and if she had to she would tie him.

I feel as if I am fighting a losing battle they care for there animals and do not want them hurt well WHAT ABOUT MINE?
I have since then reenforced my cages nothing in or out. I still have problems with them trying to digg under my cages but they cannot get in all they do is pop up the wire floor and I have to refix it every few days with new dirt and hay. So just a little more work on my part. Anything I see them on my land I run them off but they always come back.

I just feel some people dont see chickens as real pets like dogs or cats ect. Since I have had chickens I wouldnt have any OTHER PET.

use pepperspray on the dogs next time you see them in your yard. they will immediately run back home and shake off in her house

then call animal control.
