Close call: We almost lost Limpy Drake this evening 🥶😨😦

Sounds like they do have you trained, maybe you can set up a side shelter that God forbid should it happen again, they'd have a place to get into. I've since stopped closing off the chicken door when I am cleaning, I just boot them in the butt with the broom. Their nosy and like to come watch what I'm doing. So much so they will walk away from their scratch.

Don't tell my ducks, but in fact it is the other way around and i have trained them to obey my commands! - When i go into the duck house to collect the eggs, clean-up, fill water and food, i shout out »housekeeping« - like the maids do in hotels. They have learned that they should stay out of the house when i say that and often they assemble in front of the door to watch what i'm doing there…

lol, I wonder if that will work on my chickens, I generally just boot them with the broom and tell them to get out in the run and act like chickens.

I did not do that on purpose, it just happened that i was saying the same things to my duck on the same occasions, like "Alle Enten gehen jetzt schlafen!" (All ducks go sleeping now.) when they should go into their house, so they connected those "noises" with what to do. I did not even know that ducks can learn that before i had ducks and was really surprised when i realized that i had trained them. - That "housekeeping!" then was on purpose, and they learned the meaning of it within just one week.
Just try it with your chickens, maybe it will work too. We humons always seem to underestimate the intelligence of animals…
