Close call with stray Pit Bull in our back yard. Sad Update! pg 7

Sorry for your loss. Parvo is pretty ubiquitous so it may or may not have been from the pitbull. You should expect a puppy to contract it if the puppy has not been vaccinated. It is really senseless & tragic in this day and age for a puppy to die of Parvo because it is so easily prevented with the shot(s). Around here, the shots are available cheap at the feed-store (you don't have to go to a vet & shot is less than $10) -- again, totally preventable.

X2, around here you can get a parvo shot from the feed store for $4.99, and a 5 in 1 shot for $7.99.

I can't tell you how many heartbreaking sick dogs I've seen come into the vet hospital where I worked for a totally preventable disease.

If you can't afford a $10 vaccine you shouldn't own a dog. And you can't bleach your dirt yard, all you can do is get the vaccines.

I saved my pup from it when I was a teen. The vet diagnosed him and told me if I really wanted him I should give it a try. Pepto and water. He gave me a big syringe and sent me and the pup home. Every 30 minutes I was giving him water and every hour a few CCs of Pepto. After a few days that was one hungry pup. I missed a week of school but considered it well worth it.

Shouldn't need very much bleach, depending upon the size of the yard and all. Weird the vet bill would be 300 dollars for parvo? My cousin's chihuahua caught parvo not long ago, all she did was give her beef bouillon/water in a syringe every so often, as well as due to the stage the dog had progressed she had to buy a drip from the vet (I don't remember the price, but no where near 300) to keep the dog hydrated and the dog was and is fine. She stayed up most of the time with the dog to make sure the dog didn't fall asleep, as that is when it takes them, but that is pretty much it.

Sorry for your loss though, however.

I also had 3 pups who got it a long time ago when I was a teen. The vet sent me home with some meds and I had to give it to them 3 x a day, AND give them a TINY amount of water every 30 minutes. I really didn't think they were going to make it, but they did! ALL three of them!

But on the flip side I've seen a lot of dogs who had full hospital care ranging into the thousands of dollars and still not make it. It hits some breeds harder than others.

I would not blame you for killing the stray. I posted on another thread about culling strays and got beat up for it but fact is your dog would be here if that dog was not and if you vaccinated so I would in the future cover all your bases. Sorry for your loss she was a cutie and you obviously loved her very much.

So sorry for your loss hun..
Animal abuse is not the awnser for the loss of your loved one.
Cats carry parvo as well. They carry it but is unlikely to suffer from it.
There are ways you can prevent a dog from getting parvo. They carry shots at TSC for a little less than 7 bucks. Ask for 1st puppy shot. Give the dog the shot and wait 6-7 weeks and go back and ask for the 2nd puppy shot. (if you get another puppy.) You can bleach your yard to help kill the virus. Plus if it freezes it will also help kill the virus as well. You can carry parvo as some one as already said. It is not the dogs fault his owners let him run loose. In stead of killing the poor dog call the local animal shelter or contact a local animal rescue. (Just because Im an animal activist I must say Dont punish the breed punish the deed. Pitbulls arent bred to be vicious they are trained that way. )
There are several ways you can try an save a dog with parvo now you know the symptoms. If any other of your dogs suffer from parvo. You can get a vitamin gum rub from a feed store. I can get the name for you if you want. You can also force feed them pedialyte and force feed them a vitamin enriched diet such as cooked liver. Most likely the first 24 hours are crucial for a dog whom is suffering from parvo. If youd like anymore information i would be happy to help just pm me. Again Im so sorry for your loss.

So sorry! That is just terrible! Don't beat yourself up too much, an accident is an accident. How could you have ever known your healthy pup would just mysteriously contract parvo? Yes, shots are important, but honestly, none of us are in your financial situation. If your vet wanted $300 for parvo treatment, most likely they wanted an extreme amount for parvo vaccines too. Times are tough, but just hug your family and pets closely, and take comfort that they are there for you. And make yourself a promise to get that stray taken care of. Whether or not it was "that" dog that carried parvo is moot. That dog will eventually harm/maim/kill someone or something on your property! I know it's hard, but you need to ask around, find a hunter, and have their number on speed dial. If the sheriff/animal control won't help you, find someone who will. And I agree with everyone else, skip the bb gun, they might deter a squirrel, but not a dog. I like the wasp can idea, that stuff does spray a long distance!

And as for the 7 years, it is not just your yard, but your home as well since your beautiful baby was there as well. I would suggest you not worry about bleaching the property, when you decide to get a new puppy, make sure it has had EVERY vaccine before bringing it home. They only need to be 12 weeks (sometimes older depending on breed) to have gotten their full round of shots, so you CAN still have a puppy.

WhiteMountainsRanch - I checked all the low cost vet clinics & low cost vaccinations in my area, the minimum cost I found was $35. I had put that money aside to get her shots. Unfortunately my husband has just started his business and unexpected bills keep coming up and the money I set aside had to be used for his business.
I was raised in So. Calif, and the only way to get vaccine meds for your pet, was to go to the vet or a clinic. I had never heard of TSC till we got to Texas, and never knew I could purchase the meds there.
When my 14 year old dog had Flea Anemia I got a loan from my credit union to get her a blood transfusion, she had kidney damage, and was told she would only live another 2 months. I bought & cooked up calves liver for a month for the iron to build up her red blood cells, even though the smell of it made me sick. The last two weeks of her life, she wore diapers at night, and I had plastic tarps on my bed if the diaper fell off.
My other dog was 13 and within a week and a half, went from a vibrant happy dog, to having terminal cancer. I had a rabbit who had 3 surgeries in 2 weeks for a tumor under his jaw. I had to wrap him in a towel to put the meds under his chin, and he could only eat soft food.
I had a white dove who at the age of 16 injured his wing, took him a bird vet, a year later, he had blood on his wing, our regular vet told me Fred had cancer. He told me doves don't live long enough to get cancer, but Fred was 17 years old when he passed.
A week after moving to Texas, my 15 1/2 year old dog had to be put down, twice a year I had to take her to the vet to get allergy shots, if not she would rip out all the hair at her hind quarters, and bite herself till she was raw.
And I do feel guilty for not doing what I should have done, but please don't rub salt in a already open wound. It is almost 2:30 in the morning, and I still can not sleep, because all I want to do is cry. I have always taken care of my animals, but with moving cross country, my husband going from Active Duty Navy to Reserves, setting up a new house & business, getting our children in school, life got a little overwhelming & unfortunately my Sophie paid the price for my mistake.

Mother_Hen2011 - She was fine on Sunday, Monday she was quiet, Tues, is when the vomiting & bloody stool occurred, this was when I was using a syringe to get chicken broth & water down her, every 15 minutes. She either spit it back out, or if she drank water, she would vomit it back up. We called the vet Tues. evening, and this is when we were told it was Parvo. They said the test to verify Parvo was $40, the IV & overnight & meds would be $300, and they could not say if she would even survive.

chickened & RedReiner - Believe me, that is all I have thought about for the last day and a half, and this is why I can not sleep, If I could turn hack time I would.

love-my-wolves - Thank You

My girls want another dog desperately, but I told them, we need to wait till spring, when we can find the right dog for our family, who has all it's shots before it can come home with us. There are yuckies out there, and we do not want anything to happen to any new dog we may get. They understand as well as a 4 & 6 year old can. They asked why Marty did not get sick, and I told them, because Marty got all his shots at the animal shelter before he came home to live with us. We had to wait a week for him, because they only do the snip snip surgery on Wednesdays, and we picked him up on a Friday. So we will take one day at a time, and just let the girls love on their chickens for now.

Mommy 2 Wee ones, Any dog roaming the neighborhood killing domestic pets whether it be a dog, fox, cat, or whatever is a PREDATOR and you would be justified in killing it humanely if you deem necessary.

I apologize if I came across callous... It's just that I see SOOOOO many heartbreaking cases of this in the vet that I worked at for 5 years it starts to really wear on your nerves and heart... I can't tell you how many times I have gone home crying from work because owners couldn't pay for shots, or some other small minute thing that ended up costing the animal it's life. I tell them over and over ANY feedstore carries vaccines, even the ones in the middle of cities, but sometimes they just don't "get it" until it actually directly affects them. I apologize again if I seemed rude in any way, and I commend you taking care of your other animals to the best of your ability.
