WhiteMountainsRanch - I checked all the low cost vet clinics & low cost vaccinations in my area, the minimum cost I found was $35. I had put that money aside to get her shots. Unfortunately my husband has just started his business and unexpected bills keep coming up and the money I set aside had to be used for his business.
I was raised in So. Calif, and the only way to get vaccine meds for your pet, was to go to the vet or a clinic. I had never heard of
TSC till we got to Texas, and never knew I could purchase the meds there.
When my 14 year old dog had Flea Anemia I got a loan from my credit union to get her a blood transfusion, she had kidney damage, and was told she would only live another 2 months. I bought & cooked up calves liver for a month for the iron to build up her red blood cells, even though the smell of it made me sick. The last two weeks of her life, she wore diapers at night, and I had plastic tarps on my bed if the diaper fell off.
My other dog was 13 and within a week and a half, went from a vibrant happy dog, to having terminal cancer. I had a rabbit who had 3 surgeries in 2 weeks for a tumor under his jaw. I had to wrap him in a towel to put the meds under his chin, and he could only eat soft food.
I had a white dove who at the age of 16 injured his wing, took him a bird vet, a year later, he had blood on his wing, our regular vet told me Fred had cancer. He told me doves don't live long enough to get cancer, but Fred was 17 years old when he passed.
A week after moving to Texas, my 15 1/2 year old dog had to be put down, twice a year I had to take her to the vet to get allergy shots, if not she would rip out all the hair at her hind quarters, and bite herself till she was raw.
And I do feel guilty for not doing what I should have done, but please don't rub salt in a already open wound. It is almost 2:30 in the morning, and I still can not sleep, because all I want to do is cry. I have always taken care of my animals, but with moving cross country, my husband going from Active Duty Navy to Reserves, setting up a new house & business, getting our children in school, life got a little overwhelming & unfortunately my Sophie paid the price for my mistake.
Mother_Hen2011 - She was fine on Sunday, Monday she was quiet, Tues, is when the vomiting & bloody stool occurred, this was when I was using a syringe to get chicken broth & water down her, every 15 minutes. She either spit it back out, or if she drank water, she would vomit it back up. We called the vet Tues. evening, and this is when we were told it was Parvo. They said the test to verify Parvo was $40, the IV & overnight & meds would be $300, and they could not say if she would even survive.
chickened & RedReiner - Believe me, that is all I have thought about for the last day and a half, and this is why I can not sleep, If I could turn hack time I would.
love-my-wolves - Thank You
My girls want another dog desperately, but I told them, we need to wait till spring, when we can find the right dog for our family, who has all it's shots before it can come home with us. There are yuckies out there, and we do not want anything to happen to any new dog we may get. They understand as well as a 4 & 6 year old can. They asked why Marty did not get sick, and I told them, because Marty got all his shots at the animal shelter before he came home to live with us. We had to wait a week for him, because they only do the snip snip surgery on Wednesdays, and we picked him up on a Friday. So we will take one day at a time, and just let the girls love on their chickens for now.
