Close call with stray Pit Bull in our back yard. Sad Update! pg 7

Our fence is a 5 ft welded wire, we have no gates.

Have only been here for 6 months, at the time did not think we needed a gun.


Guess what, tomorrow after dropping the kids off at school, we are going gun shopping!

I too am now afraid to let the kids out back, and even my two little dogs, will be walking around with a shovel in my hands tomorrow when I do have to let the dogs out to potty.

Hubby will be sitting and waiting for that dog to show up!

I would be very cautious about letting out any itty bitty dogs or kids.....having worked at animal control for years and years, it only takes a few seconds and then good luck trying to get that dog to let go. If its been back twice, it'll be back again. I would suggest going out yourself to check for it, before taking your little ones out to potty, take them out on leash and stand guard. Seriously, I can't even describe how fast it happens and there is no stopping a dog like that once it grabs hold.

Too many pitbulls have been bred to be mean, and that is generally why a lot of people get them, and proceed to make them that way.

I have had 1 cat killed by a pitbull, and two cats almost killed. I was in the yard with my cats, and armed with a broom that I had been using to sweep my deck. I never knew I could move like a broom wielding ninja when the situation called for it. I'm sure I looked pretty crazy, but my two cats lived that day, luckily. My poor sweet other kitty was attacked while I wasn't home. The neighbors witnessed it, and didn't have time to do anything before it was all over.

What is worst about them is the way that they kill. They grab a hold of their prey (you can beat them over the head and they will not let go) and shake it to death or strangle it if they can get the throat. It's not pretty. They can be extremely dangerous dogs.

I am an animal lover and I do animal rescue, but if the authorities are doing nothing about this dog (animal control, police...), then you are doing yourself, your animals, and your other neighbors a favor by disposing of it. Just make the shot as quick and clean as possible so that the animal does not suffer any more than necessary. The people that owned the dog that killed my cat had numerous unpaid fines for other pitbulls that had caused problems in the neighborhood, and several of their dogs had been put down for the same reasons. They just kept getting new dogs, or breeding their own, to replace the old ones that were euthanized. They didn't care that their dogs had killed numerous people's pets.

Something told me the OP didn't have a gun in the house. What a shame. Call me paranoid but I keep one on my belt all day long. I never walk out of the house without it.

I sold some stuff on craiglist last week and the fellow that bought it has a dog training/rescue business in Atlanta. He has some of Michael Vick's dogs at his place. He said they were in bad shape. But they did not have to put one down. Time, patience, and work they got the dogs in manageable condition. He said that yes, the dogs had been bred to be fighters. They are fine with people but very aggressive toward other dogs. People have just about ruined a very good dog for their love of blood and killing.

The pit I used to have could gracefully sail over any fence you put her in. The only way we could ensure she wouldn't get out of the yard was to tie her out, or so we thought. She chewed right through her tie out one day while DH and I were at work, jumped the fence and got hit by a car in the road. If you've called the police twice and they haven't done anything about it (which is ridiculous by the way, especially since its showing aggression towards people) I'd say its time to get yourself a gun. Put some lead in that sucker, and be done with your problem. Good luck- there's almost nothing worse than a free roaming dog. OF ANY BREED....

Folks, let's not make this a breed discussion. This is a large, powerful, aggressive dog on someone's property, not where it belongs, threatening to bite. That's all we need to discuss. The sheriff could shoot the darn thing because of that and I don't know why they won't.

I would certainly be contacting the sheriff and ask if allowing an aggressive dog to remain at large is SOP. I would point out the legal exposure that such actions could incur if the animal continued on its way and harmed or possibly killed someone.

In my yard a stray scared dog gets motivated to go on its way. If you've been around dogs you know how a scared lost animal acts. If the dog is even slightly aggressive then all bets are off and it will be put down no questions asked. I would strongly recommend taking defensive measures.

I am wondering if the dog belongs to the previous residents, had been given to new owners and got loose and tried to find his way "home" and found a stranger (your hubby) and thats why he growled at him... You said you had only been there for 6 months. Its not impossible. I had that happen with one of my Pits. I had gotten her, she'd been with a different family, they moved away, and she wanted to go home, so she got herself loose, traveled across town including to cross a bridge/river and went back to her old home. This was after I had her for several weeks... She totally freaked out the new people in her old house, but the neighbors recognized her and were able to track me down so I could bring her back home. Just a thought.

The dog doesn't need to be shot. Yes they can be scarry, If you can get it trapped in a dog cage till animal control can come... I can't beleive the sherrif didn't do anything about it though. They could have tranked the dog and took him to a holding/rescue home till animal control could take over...But then again, I guess it depends on the county you are in.

you have your chickens and your CHILDREN to protect!forget the bb gun.this dog is grouling at your husband and showing aggresion.if you shoot it with a bb gun most likely its going to triger him to attack!i recomend useing a real gun,before he turns on a member of your family! i normaly wouldnt recomend that for a dog,but this is NOT a normal circumstans!and you have already had lawinforcement involved.so legaly ,depending on gun laws in your area,you should be ok.
