Dropped off my seeds with BockBock2008 last night. I gave her enough seeds for everyone to get Giant Pumpkins. I did forget to write the common name on the envelopes - they are Atlantic Giant. I would give them a minimum of 400 sq ft per plant (20'x20'). I always gave mine between 600 and 800 sq ft. The plants can be pruned to keep them from getting too big, but I have heard of single plants covering 2500 sq ft.
If you decide you want to grow them, feel free to send me a PM. You'll need to plant them inside. I use a ice cream container (such as Edy's) and cut the bottom out of it. I cut down the side and tape back down the side with duct tape. This is done so that the container can be removed without damaging the root system.
I file the edge of the seed (staying away form the tip) until I see a difference in color. I found this picture online to show what it looks like whe you reach the other color.
Once you have filed your seed, soak it in water for 3-4 hours. Place potting soil in your pot (just enough moisture so that when you put a handful of soil your hand and squeeze you get just the slightest amount of water to drip out - don't make it too wet). Put the seed in the soil (point down) top of the seed should be about 1" below the surface. Cover the top of the container with plastic wrap and put a rubber band on it to hold it in place. This will keep the moisture in the soil.
It will take between 4 days and 8 days to come up. Once it does, it will grow pretty quickly. Put a light source a couple inches above the plant to keep it from getting leggy.
It will take 135 days for these pumpkins, so you can plant these pumpkins outside when you plant the rest of your garden (after last frost of course).
Good Luck to all!
