Hello,

I have a small Silkie flock where one juvenile randomly passed yesterday. He was out and about very sluggish, puffed up, I brought him inside, and he passed away that night. No signs of trauma, no bloody stools (in fact, I didn’t see any stools), nothing. He wasn’t underweight? Today I noticed several others passing very watery, green, chunky stools similar to the picture attached. IF they do have Clostridium perfringens, can I use Dur Vet penicillin injectable? How much should I administer? Treat everyone??

None are at the sluggish, puffed up point yet. All are walking around, eating, drinking, etc. They just have odd stools & the one that obviously passed suddenly yesterday has me worried. :(

This is not my photo but definitely what theirs looks like. I will try to take a picture today of their actual stools.

Sorry for your loss. :hugs

I think you can use penicillin, but you could also use Tylan 50 orally, though it has to be given 3-4 time per day.

Can you take one to the vet?

Do you still have the one that died? If so, you might want to try to do your own necropsy.

The Tylan 50 dose for chickens is 50 mg per pound per day (1 ml per pound), but must be given 3-4 times a day.

3x a day = 0.33 ml per pound 3 times a day
4x a day = 0.25 ml per pound 4 times a day

Amoxicillin dose is 57 mg per pound twice a day.

Injectable Penicillin dose is 0.15 ml per pound once day. Give in breast muscle.

I said penicillin as I already have it handy but I can go to TSC & look for Tylan. Yes, I still have the deceased one. He passed late Sunday night or very early Monday morning so he is very stiff... what would I need to do for the necropsy?

Thanks for the dosage & help! <3

Also, what needle size from TSC for Silkies?
It's been a long time since I used penicillin, but I think it's pretty thick, so maybe get a few sizes, like 18 to draw out out the bottle, and a 22 to inject the birds?
