i have 23 hens and one rooster. the only one that’s a pet is my rooster...and the only one with a name. i treat all of them with the same care but he’s the only one that will die of old age.

I consider my chickens to be the pets that always put a smile on my face. They spend their days happily scratching in the dirt looking for grubs and occasionally getting a special treat. They all know their names, and each one enjoys spending time on my lap in front of the fire when it’s cold out. I really love them! I love seeing everyone’s answers as to why they consider their flock as livestock or pets - or both!

Mine are a bit of both I have a few that are pets and a few that are livestock but everyone in between are a bit of both where they have names and I know who they are but when it comes time to butcher I wouldn't be that sad.

They are pets in that they have names and personalities and I take pictures of them and buy special treats or bring home big branches and things I think they will like. But I don't know that I would have even thought to keep chickens if my family didn't eat a dozen eggs a day. So they're pets with a purpose!
