Coalition of Animal Sanctuaries Urges Ban on Backyard Chickens

I agree, I think that the point about unwanted roosters was partially dealt with by the earlier points about chicken sexing. But I do think its worth mentioning that some cities do allow roosters, and that crowing can be treated like any other noise disturbance.

Thanks for looking up the shelter statistics, as I suspected, the 'problem' isn't nearly as bad as they are trying to paint it. None of the shelters in Arizona have chickens at all, when I looked on petfinder, the closest chickens were in Nevada.

Thank-you, thank-you, thank-you!! Hubby and I had the same question; what are the stats, exactly? I just didn't get around to looking it up. "Innundated with calls" sounds like they were exaggerating. This is really important b/c I agree with whoever listed possible objections and noted that overwhelmed shelters and expense of enforcing ordinances would be something that would make an impression on city officials.

All of us have been inundated with calls to take in hens and roosters who are a) no longer wanted; b) not the correct sex; c) not legally permissible. As organizations with limited resources and space, it is no longer feasible to take in even a small percentage of these unwanted animals.

I also like what you and AZKat are working on here. It had occurred to me to make a BYC page listing possible objections, responses, and links to references that would be easily accessible (rather than wading through a long thread) for someone trying to get chicken-keeping legalized in their community. Looks like you two are way ahead of me, though.

Katherine, I still think that page is a great idea! In addition to this stuff we're working on here, there's a document on scribd that goes into a lot of other possible objections/concerns/questions.

Val,

I will work on this after the holidays. I'm CRAZY busy right now and way behind. Expecting 11 houseguests in just a few days!!

Anyway, after the madness I will crib the good ideas from this thread, check the link you provided, use some of my own ideas and draft a page. Then I'll post a thread asking for suggestions/additions/revisions etc before posting the page.

Happy holidays/merry christmas/happy yule/hannukah/kwanza to all.

I just did a Petfinder search for WI, and no chickens; in fact, the only barnyard animals that came up were a goat, 4 pigs and 7 llamas. I scrolled through 8 pages and didn't see any chickens for adoption anywhere.

Katherine, I really don't think the 16,000 rescue chickens can count toward this coalition's stats, because they are from an industrial source, not backyard flocks. Two totally separate practices.

Looking forward to picking this up after the holidays. Merry Christmas to you!
