Cocci: Corid (amprolium) + Sulfamethoxazole / Trimethoprim

Cages should be steam
cleaned to prevent reinfection. Supplement diet with B vitamins.

Because the cocci in the poo won't cause re-infestation? I guess maybe their capacity is diminished.

Also... not ALL B vitamins ARE thiamine! I'm just glad (sometimes) to have a brain that tries to seeks out the WHOLE truth. Thank you all for the very valid discussion. :highfive:

"A vitamin B1 (thiamine) deficiency can be created by using amprolium (Corid®) too often. Some animal health specialists advise giving animals injections of thiamine hydrochloride when treating goats with amprolium."
Our Veterinarian gives us this.. Will this cause a Thiamine deficiency?:pop

I'm gonna go ahead and focus on that word "too often".

Indicates to me that a standard round of treatment will NOT cause a deficiency, but EXCESSIVE use can/will..

Excessive use of anything really isn't good and indicates that there are more problems at hand, I think. Though I know, this is just for discussion and not saying any one has so far.

From the same article regarding Sulfa drugs...
"Sulfa drugs may not cure coccidiosis but are often given to infected goats to prevent secondary infections such as bacterial enteritis."

Thinking ya, maybe the internal segregation with the sulfa for the first gal may be a good idea also. I wouldn't personally use it as a first line of defense, but I do like to think that vets USUALLY know more than I do!

So our sick hen has been on the sulfatrim since Friday night and the whole crop with Corid in the drinking water since Saturday morning.

The sick hen is now exhibiting some signs of lethargy and loss of appetite. Side effects of the sulfatrim seem to include both of those things, so I'm hoping it is that and not a regression in the cocci.

Problem is the sulfatrim dose is for 14 days. Hard to know if it is helping or harming her at this point. Plan is to keep her on it but monitor closely.

Thoughts?
