Hello Feather Friends
Writing to post what I've been dealing with lately. I have raised chickens off and on about 15 years and I've had my newest flock about 3 years. I only (had) 5 this time. I lost my sweet Buff Orpington last Sunday to Cocci. Thank goodness I found her symptoms on here so I rushed to buy some powder Corid at Tractor Supply.
Let me back up and say that last week I thought she had eaten something bad or caught a bird virus of some sort which basically she did. I kept waiting for her to pull through. Even giving her amoxicillin from the vet I had in hopes would knock out whatever. It did not help.
Her symptoms were as follows:
*First, she wandered from the flock. Kept herself separated. Moving about slowly. Oblivious to anything around her.
*Less and less daily activity
*Started constant drinking water!
*Water diarrhea -no blood in stool.
* Standing /sitting during day time with eyes closed for periods
*Some white in stool but eventually just water-stool is only way I know to discribe it.
*Fluffy chicken- I thought she was getting her winter feathers or something. Thinking gee my hens look nice and fluffy.
*Last stage, quit eating. Even refusing fruit and egg which she
Loved as treats. Refused also meal worm treats :(. I knew then it would not be long but I had not heard of Corid. I have not visited the site in a while to my regret. I may could have saved Buffy had I known what I was dealing with. I'm posting this to try and help others.
Today I have one Americana hen who is starting to show symptoms. I gave her the solution through a syringe to assure some went down before pouring into their water bowls.
My mixture was 1/2 tsp of powder Corid mixed to 1 gallon water.
Gosh I hope this works.
I will say oddly enough 30 mins later my Americana hen named "Dovey" (looks like a white dove) she finally ate for first time since yesterday morning. I was delighted and hope this is a
Miracle solution. It got great reviews and people claim it's fast acting. So now all my waterers contain this solution as a preventative for next 5 days. I hope my girls will be okay. They are my sweet pets. They free range all day except for night. How? Well I moved to the city this past spring and have a complete 6foot fence. Wood. It's great. I love it. They can go up whenever they like. My neighbors says she has had her 20 hens for about 5 yrs and they free range so I thought this is good. Still I lock them up at night just to keep away a wandering cat or worse.
Anyways. I will let you guys know the turn out.
How did they get this? Not sure but I have lots of doves and Pegeons that love to eat whatever chicken feed my girls leave behind. None are aggressive towards my birds though. Maybe it was due to their droppings or something. I don't really know. I just want my birds back to healthy!

My new chicken is currently battling anorexia, possibly worms, and coccidiosis. She is on medication and improving! I'm so sorry for your lost, but I'm glad no other losses with happen! Quick questions, one of my chickens has extremely watery poop. Literally water. It just absorbs into the sand. And it's clear. She eats, drinks, and plays normally. This has been going on for about 2 months. I have been told some chickens just have watery poop. Is that true? Thanks! :)

Honestly in reply to what you are describing my Dovey has had watery poop after trauma a year ago And if this is your only bird with symptoms there are some neat products at Tractor Supply.
One being probiotics powder to be mixed with one gallon water.
Also I read good things about a product called VetRX also at Tractor Supply. I'd probably go with this first in your shoes. Lots of good info on here about that product. And it has great reviews. Mixing instructions on the box. It is made to keep your chickens healthy and I believe fight digestive issues along with respiratory issues. Once my girls are off Corid for a while I will prob give them this in the winter.
Just pay attention and look for increased symptoms from your one hen who has the water poop. I would not minimize this. Water poop is not normal. Especially real watery. My sick ones started projectile water poop. Gross, I know, but I want to be clear.

Is the VEtRX safe to give as preventative? If nothing is wrong but I still give it to them, will it harm them?
