I am very confused regarding what the procedure is for Cocci in baby chicks. I plan to brood 5 chicks inside my coop later this year, and I've heard to cocci can be a problem when taking chicks outside. I know that most people use corid to prevent/ treat it. But I've also heard that brooding chicks outside can help them build up an immunity to cocci as well? So should I buy corid to prevent it from happening in the first place or should I treat as symptoms appear?

Due to overhatching, our 2.5 brooders in the house were full to the max. Folks are coming to buy, but I couldn't wait any longer, so we put about 30 three-week-olds outside in two different growout pens.

Then it dawns on me, I've done nothing to acclimate them. They have heat in the hutches of those, so warmth wasn't my issue when it gets down to 49F tonight, it was the new terrain.

At the minimum, had I been thinking, I'd have bought medicated and put them on it for the past week or so. Too late now. We'll see, but the last time I did this without doing anything, they wound up with coccidiosis.

The smartest I ever was when pulling this stunt was to get a shovel of grass and dirt, put it in a shallow box, and set it in the brooder. They had a blast with it! That sure helps them handle being put outside when the time comes!

But, we'll see. We have Corid, so we'll just watch them close for any symptoms and be ready to treat them. We'll know within a few days if we're in the clear or not.

Good luck with yours!
