In the Brooder

I just lost my 3 baby chicks in the last 24 hours. I believe it was cocci since I found two dead with little spots of blood around the brooder. They seemed fine the day before but dead by morning. The last one seemed fine this morning just a little quieter. We started the Corrid yesterday within hours of finding the dead chick since a chicken friend said she suspected that's what it was. They were outside 6 weeks old and off heat for 3 weeks since it has been so warm and humid until the last couple of days when it got very damp, cool and rainy. My question is: My brooder is in my chicken yard [it's a covered A-frame small coop that rests directly on the ground]. Is Cocci something that will endanger my 20 week old chicks or my older hens? When I remove the brooder do I need to somehow dig up the ground or bleach it or do you think my older ones will be okay?
Thanks

I'm pretty sure you can't get rid of the bacteria entirely - and it doesn't hurt to treat your whole flock whether they have symptoms or not. Here's a really great article on the topic.

Also, sometimes changes in weather can exacerbate issues - meaning that your chicks might have been handling the cocci load in their systems fine until the cold lowered their resistance. Sometimes we get a "perfect storm" here, where several factors came together to create a health issue for our birds.
I really wish you the very best with your flock! :)

Get Corid ASAP.
Treat all for severe outbreak:
