Hi
I have a hen in my quarantine pen with 5 others. I brought them home 2 weeks ago. I've never seen a chicken do this. She was puffy 4 days ago, and I have had coccidia issues this year, so I started the entire pen on Baycox/Endocox (Corid hasn't worked for me). At the end of the 3 day treatment (today), she started this head nodding thing. I talked to a chicken mentor and he said to start them all on Albon, so I have. She's lethargic, but sort of active. Pecks at food. But overall depressed. She's around 5 months old. Comes from a closed flock. Has anyone ever seen this? Could it be something else?
I gave her poultry nutridrench orally this morning and this afternoon. None of the other birds show any signs of illness. Previously they had all been on Oregano Oil and Probiotics in their water. They are fed a 20% All Flock feed.

I have video, but I wasn't able to attach it..... so I've attached a few screen captures. She's nodding - in the foreground.

For video upload to youtube and provide a lik.

Is her crop emptying overnight?
Her crop was fairly empty last night and is completely empty this morning. No odd smells. No breathing issues. She did sleep on her roost last night (she didn't the night before), so maybe she's improving.... but still head nodding and droopy at breakfast. Droppings under their roost looked pretty dang good. I'm at a loss.

does anyone ever wonder if chickens have an intolerance or allergy to some meds/treatments? similar to how people can't take amoxicillin for example? I know I get a rash from meds and don't feel good until it makes it's way out of my system, but I still eat and go to the bathroom :p

maybe the meds didn't make her feel good

I wondered that too! Yes. That's why I was happy to be done with Baycox. I wish I knew what was up. If she passes I'm going to try and get a post mortem done if I can find a vet to do it. I'd hate to lose her though. Prior to this she was a sweet, big, healthy gal.

Crop emptying is good.

What do you feed?
Next thing to "try" would be vitamin therapy. Poultry Cell would be a good choice - give 1cc per 3 pounds of weight orally once a day for 3-5 days.

Other than that - very hard to know what's going on. Some birds are weak and really don't thrive very well - conditions, diseases, parasites and genetics all can have an impact.
Hopefully she will make a full recovery.

If you do lose her, then a necropsy is your best chance at more information.

I feed Nutrena 20% protein All Flock with Oregano Oil in their water a few times a week and Probiotics. I'll supplement with Poultry Cell. Good idea. Thank you!
