coccidiosis issues.

Here's a thought/question just because I've seen so many potential Coccidiosis cases come up and even suspected it here.

Are chicks who are Coccidiosis vaccinated at hatchery (and given non medicated feed) still susceptible to Coccidiosis?
Is there really a benefit to the vaccine? Or medicated feed?

There are nine species of coccidia, and that's just the ones that favor chickens as hosts. The best that vaccine and medicated feed can do is to help a chick develop resistance. Even an adult chicken that has become resistant to the local coccidia can become overwhelmed by coccidia brought in from another locale on shoes, car tires, and garden implements loaned and shared.

Spring is a key time for coccidia outbreaks due to warming ground and moist conditions. It's wise to keep Corid on hand to treat immediately when you suspect coccidiosis.

Are you using Corid to treat these chicks? You should be treating them all, even the new ones if they've been on the soil at some point. The symptoms of the dead chick could be coccidiosis . There isn't necessarily blood in the stools, but the mucous lining of the intestines could have caused the chick to cough up blood.

It could be a respiratory infection and it doesn't hurt to treat for both. But while you can treat all the chicks with Corid, only symptomatic chicks should be treated with Tylan.
They all were (and still are) being treated for coccidiosis just in case it could come back. No one else is having signs anymore but it says to do it for 27 days so we are. If anyone else has signs I will start tylan I didn't know you could do both at the same time without compromising the immune system.

Personally, I think it's better to just expect them to get it and treat it since there are many strands and just because they are immune to one doesn't mean they are to all. Also, then they can build an immunity. I wouldn't have brought home more if I thought it could still be this. It's been two and a half weeks since we have seen symptoms. *sigh*.

I never heard of mixing the grit in with their feed but free choice on the side . I doubt that has anything to do w/ your problem it just struck me odd. I hope they heal .

Can you post some photos of your chicks, housing and their poop?

What dosage of Corid are you using?
This is the only photo I have of inside the coop. We use a combo of store bought bedding and grass cuttings (we have a lot since we live on 17 acres). Sorry for the lack of photos. I'll try to get more soon.for the coccidiosis I'm using Corid at a 9.6% liquid solution to a gallon of water. I don't use a gallon container on the coop and don't math well so hubby measures it out each day. I also add ice since its 90 here already. With the grit, I figure, if they don't need it they will pick it out or peck around it in the feeder. That seems to be the case anyways.
