Hey all,
I hope this is the right section for this. To start out- we do not currently have a coccidiosis issue, but I am wondering how to prevent one in my flock. I have eight hens, all 12 weeks old. They have never been on medicated feed, and currently live in my garage in a large coop we built with pine bedding. We have let them outside a bunch on the deck and patio area, but they have not officially moved outside. Trust me, this hasn't been ideal but the ground was too frozen to dig and we completed the coop and run as soon as we could.
A few people suggested on here a month or two ago to start introducing them to some of the soil where we live, and I've sprinkled some in their coop a few times, but with the frozen ground and temps I doubt I've successfully introduced any parasites or bacteria into their living space. We have finally finished building their large run area in our backyard, and would like to move them out this weekend.
My question is, how can I prevent coccidiosis in my chickens at this age since they haven't been on medicated feed and (lets assume) haven't been introduced to any coccidia in their environment at a younger age to build up immunity? Is there anything I can do to build up immunity without an outbreak? Or should I just keep Amproleum on hand and pray?
Thanks in advance!
