My Coop
I am new to owning chickens and am desperate for help.....unfortunately I have a severe outbreak of Coccidiosis (I think) and I have done everything right: clean sanitized coop, clean run, no food on the ground they have had apple cider in water since day one and eating appropriate foods (nothing they can't have) I have since stopped treats and only do feed.... My one pullet passed away very fast last weekend (within 2 days) and they all were treated immediately and had been on corid for 5 days, so I stopped treatment- everyone else seemed to be fine but then 3 days later I found more bloody droppings and witnessed 3 of my girls (12-16 weeks) pooping the blood- so no sense in separating them. They all seem to be acting totally normal and no signs of being "sick" other than the bloody droppings mixed with normal poop. I live in alaska and I have called the Veterinarians in my area and none of them see chickens! I am beyond frustrated and just want my birds to be healthy again! Do I have any hope that they will overcome this!?

Sorry for your loss. :hugs

The Corid powder dose is no less than 1.5 teaspoons per gallon for 5 days, then 1/3 teaspoon per gallon for 7-14 days.

The Corid liquid dose is no less than 2 teaspoons per gallon for 5 days, then 1/2 teaspoon per gallon for 7-14 days.

The above might work *if* they drink enough water *and* the strain they have is sensitive to amprolium. Contrary to popular belief, amprolium does not treat all strains of coccidiosis, some are resistant to it. :(

Since sick birds aren't usually drinking enough I give mine a drench in addition to their medicated water.

20% Powder drench - mix 1/2 teaspoon powder with 2 teaspoons water, stir well and give 0.34 ml per pound orally once or twice a day for 1-3 days.

9.6 % Liquid drench - 0.1 ml per pound orally once or twice a day for 1-3 days.

What other drugs do you have on hand?

We are doing the liquid corid 2tsp in gallon of water and I just went out and checked on them about 15 minutes prior to this thread and they were all sunbathing and dirt bathing, no bloody droppings anywhere. I don't have anything else on hand but can get anything easily from the feed store (up here its called Animal food warehouse and alaska mill and feed).

They may still be showing some damage done to the intestines from the coccidia, but there are some strains that may develop resistance to Corid. Since they are acting normal, I would stop the ACV in the water, and give them some buttermilk to drink. Sulfa antibiotics can be given if they still seem sick, but most have to come from a vet. SMZ-TMP, sulfadimethoxine, and some others may be found online, or ask a local vet to sell you some.

What dosage of Corid were you giving in a gallon of water? Also you can give Corid for 7 days at 1.5 tsp of the powder or 2 tsp of the liquid per gallon of water. Then you can reduce the dosage by 1/3 for the next 5 days.

So I gave them some cold buttermilk (they loved it) and they are all in the shade now resting, my youngest (the one I'm most worried about) pooped while I was just in there, and she had a little blood still in the poo. Can I give them anything else? Is there a special diet they can eat while on corid? I know to stay away from thiamine.

Try giving the oral drench amount to the one that pooped blood. That's what I've been doing with mine and it really seems to help.

Remember It takes some time for their insides to heal from the damage. It may take a day or so to completely clear up. The follow up dosing is important, any microbes left after completing the course of meds have a higher chance of becoming resistant.

Hi
Just found this thread trying to find help! I had 12 silkies 4weeks and 3 days old yesterday morning there was a good amount of blood all over there brooder they were all acting normal before that eating, drinking and running all over. They have been in a brooder in my house and never outside the brooder is cleaned everyday waterer and feeder washed out everyday and littler replaced every few days. Went and got corrid after I saw the blood and started treating 2 teaspoons per gallon right away and made fresh throughout the day while cleaning the waterers out. Over night 2 passed away all brooders, feeders and waterers were scrubbed with bleach and hot water. The poops looked like puddles of blood. Today some aw running, eating and drinking and some are sitting in balls not moving around to much. I need some serious help please. I do have another brooder with chicks a little older in the and room that I treated with corrid and they are not showing and signs I also have larger chickens around 2-3 months old in coops in my yard that I also started treating just in case.

Do you have a food scale that you can with them on? When mine get sick like this I weigh them and give one or two drops of undiluted Corid per 100 grams of body weight orally 1-2 times a day. I do this in addition to their medicated water. If you don't have a scale that's okay, just go ahead and give them a couple of drops.
