Cochin breeding, genetics, and showing

Pics
Thanks i appreciate it. I have never seen gl in this country, thought it may work. I have seen a cochin roo with a gold laced chest, but the breeder said he was a "red" and had no idea about gold laced. I think i will give it a miss then if the breeders aren't doing it, then i wont

I will just keep my lovely white and black girls, i do still want SLW girls, they look adorable. Will post soime pics of the boy i had in mind when i see them on Sunday. Maybe one of the breeders will start it eventually, i have called everyone, no one has them. Wish i could just order eggs like you guys and gals!
i would say, presuming a gold laced isn't available (i have no clue what's available in s. africa) , to go with the slw and maybe create BOTH lines, silver and gold at the same time. the silver i would think easier since you have good blacks. but i'm not sure what color is involved with the gold. maybe use buff or red instead of black? or else get a solid line of silver laced going (this is what i would do), then work on introducing red/gold/buff/whatever to the silver laced cochins. at least then you're not working with a totally different breed, just mixed colors within a breed.

Is this impossible? Would an outcross to a SLW bantam give me anything even vaguely close to a GL cochin a few generations down the line? Or is my project a bit daft? Pls help, i am new and want to be told i am being stupid if i am proposing something that is not possible

I recently read on showbirdbid.com about a silver laced cochin project in which someone outcrossed to wyandottes. Here's the link: http://showbirdbid.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=cif&action=display&thread=3849 you might find some of that information helpful.

I personally call it 5 points, but I'm not a judge either. as long as it's an average comb with no side sprigs, judges say you're ok and being not black or white, it's not going to matter much. I don't even cull for combs because they seem to be pretty easy to fix if it does become a problem. He looks pretty good for a mille, can't really tell without having my hands on the bird though
I'd like an honest critique,
See how there's an indentation above the blade? Would this comb be called 4 or 5 points?
What else about him? 6-7 months. You can see he's holding his wings out because it's hot..

I am working on BLR cochins and if you can get ahold of a splash BLR wyandotte then you'd be able to do it. I'd say probably a 4 year program to get something decent but I think it can be done

Thanks Mandy. The diagram Gail posted was so helpful, but then I noticed quite a few of my cockerels have that little indentation above the blade..
I'm really excited about this boy. His first chicks are on the ground, of course they're too young to tell anything yet but I think I've got a pretty decent start.

Hi

I have mostly Polish, but I just got a Cochin pair. Like an idiot I didn't ask many questions about color, etc. so maybe you Cochin people can tell me what I've got here. They look like bantams to me, but what do I know. He's 8 mnths and she's 1 yr.

I like the color on the hen, she's almost like a reverse patterned columbian :)
