Cochin ~ Genetics question

half correct: wide and skinny stripes

"muted" has to do with the fast feathering gene (as compared with the slow feathering gene which makes nice crisp bars).

There is not a gold laced bird in these photos. Do you mean the buffish bird or the partridge one (brown with black stripes, which are the juvenile feather pattern for partridge)

I'm trying to understand this.... Is this why some are lighter and others are darker? Or is that a totally different thing?

YES. Males with two copies appear much lighter. Males with one copy and females (who also have only one copy as it is a sex-linked gene) are darker.

Okay I was wondering. It was sold to me as a "Gold Laced" but I was confused when I saw Partridge online. I guess it's a partridge then? (The Buff is not a Cochin)

Okay, that makes since. Then my male has 2 copies. So does that mean no matter what the female is the babies will always look just like him?

My LF Barred Cochin and his two black Cochin girls. (RIP Big Momma).

It is their chicks that I just hatched...six.

So.....he has two copies? So, all his babies will be barred? Or is he what you are saying is muted?

Can't wait to see how they grow out.

Buff is produced through a combination of genes- the genes are columbian, dark brown, mahogany, wheaten and gold. The barring gene is best expressed on a black bird - birchen or extended black bird usually. The barring gene can be zonal in nature depending on the genetics of the bird. Sometimes the barring gene only shows in the tail or breast of the male and may be difficult to see on the female.

Thanks for explaining that.

Looks like I'm gonna just have to wait and see what I can hatch

Any ideas on the size of the offspring from a Bantam X LF cross?
