Cochin thread!

At the moment I have just one bantam cochin, I used to have two.
(plus, there's also a temporary young roo, but he isn't in my flock). But they are my absolute favourites! So Fluffy and chatty and social.

What I find really funny is that it's always a cochin who's in charge. They seem to be very good at and willing to take care of the flock.

My bantam brahma is definitely the biggest and sturdiest of my birds, and while my cochin was brooding out eggs (she was the best mother hen too!) the duties of alpha hen fell onto the brahma.... She completely had no interest in calling the others to bed or being responsible for anyone but herself 😂

Perhaps that mothering instinct makes them feel very responsible?

But they have also so much character, it's incredible! The first bantam cochin (who unfortunately passed away) was an extremely good lead hen. Super consistent (she even laid her egg always at 9 in the morning, with the occasional day off, but always at the same time), she was very thorough making sure the others were eating first :love
My current lead hen is a little clumsy, a terrible flyer, a little unorganised and talks a lot (and is sometimes being ignored), the others can all outrun her, but she is super social and has the strongest bond to humans (also strangers). In case of a threat, like telling off the occasional cat, the Brahma is the muscle and she goes to the front line to tell the intruder off.

From the eggs we hatched out there were 2 roos, one is a cochin bantam and the other a bantam wyandotte. The cochin is again the one in charge, and the other roo follows his lead without blinking.

Anyone else has experience with cochins being good flock leaders?
