I was going to get some Cochin Bantam chickens because I loved that they look like little poof balls, but hubby said no to Bantams. He wants them to earn their keep in egg production. I am now looking for the fluffiest standard sized chicken I can find. They also need to be super friendly, able to free range, and cold and heat tolerant. We get both ends of the spectrum where I am. Unfortunately the answer isn’t one of each, my coop can only sustain 3-4 more, so I need to be selective in what I get.

I love Orpingtons, Sussex, Australorps and Wyandottes! I have had all of those, and they have all been great. I live in Ohio and we also get both ends of the heat/cold. All have been more friendly breeds (I don't think an individual bird has that much to do with it, overall, these breeds are very sweet).

I was torn on just getting some more Australorps. My three Australorps are the sweetest girls.

I have English Orpingtons and highly recommend! They are large, fluffy and pretty friendly. I live in central Texas and mine do fine in the summer and the winter.
Is there a significant difference between English Orpingtons and "regular" Orpingtons? I notice my local FFH allows the ordering of English Orpingtons, but they also typically have some colors of Orpingtons available for purchase in store.

The body type is very different. American type are still fluffy, but nothing close to the English type. These are a couple of my English ladies, Felicity (lav) and Dahlia (black)
